Job summary

We invite applications for an exciting new substantive Consultant Neonatologist post at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), part of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) with a transport commitment. The successful applicant will be part of BHH tertiary Neonatal Intensive care Unit team (NICU) and the regional Neonatal Transport Service (KIDS NTS) hosted by Birmingham Women's and Children's hospital (BWCH) with a 50:50 split. Hence this full time 10 PA post will have 5PA (4 DCC and 1 SPA) each at BHH and KIDS NTS. The substantive post will commence on the 9th January 2025. Previous experience in neonatal transport is essential and subspecialty interest in echocardiography/ cardiology will be desirable.

At BHH (5PA)- 4 PAs- for DCC ( service weeks/clinics/oncalls) 0.5 PAs for core SPA and 0.5 PA flexible (clinical/ departmental roles) to be agreed at job planning.

The KIDS NTS (5PA) clinical commitments include daytime and on-calls (non-resident). 4 DCC and 1 SPA (0.5 SPA core, 0.5 SPA other -- e.g. education or governance) to the Neonatal Transport Service hosted at BWCH.

This will make a 8 DCC / 2 SPA overall post. A formal job planning meeting will take place no later than 6 months following appointment.

Main duties of the job

At BHH NICU

The post holder will be mainly based at the Birmingham Heartlands (BHH) site but will be expected to work at any of the other sites

*Out of hours on calls will be at BHH covering level 3 Neonatal unit. On call frequency will be 1:9. This will require onsite presence between 0900-21:00 hours on weekdays and weekends/bank holidays.

*Consultants work a 'Consultant of the Week' pattern covering the NICU and other areas within Heartlands Hospital Neonatal service.

*Around 4 weeks per year Intensive/High Dependency cover (First-On)

*Around 3 weeks per year Special Care, TC and PNW Cover (Second-On)

*Around 3 weeks per year as Third-on who assists with ward rounds, undertakes antenatal counselling and visits Good Hope SCBU. Some of this week is designated as SPA time.

*There may be some commitment at Good Hope Hospital

*Outpatient Clinics: approximately 11 clinics year. Clinic may be at Heartlands or Solihull Hospital

*Out of hours work is paid as supplement and has an overall frequency of 1:9 on-call (pro-rata) for Heartlands Hospital Neonatal Unit.
