Job summary

We are excited to invite applications for both Locum Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with an interest in either Upper or Lower GI surgery. The CDG9A General Surgery directorate is based at the Queen Elizabeth site. The directorate also includes a mix of Upper, Lower and Sarcoma Consultants based at the Queen Elizabeth site. The junior doctor team includes senior Specialist Registrar trainees, senior clinical fellows and various junior doctors.

The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service with both elective and emergency to take a full part in the emergency on call rota in concert with the other General Surgical Consultants. You must observe agreed policies and procedures on clinical matters and should follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Hospital. This is to support the development of evidence-based medicine and is not intended to constrain individual consultant freedom.

Main duties of the job

To participate in regular clinical audit
To ensure that clinical services are efficiently administered
To maintain CPD
To participate actively in clinical governance
To develop audit / research interests within the resources available
To participate in postgraduate and undergraduate medical teaching and to the training and development of all members of the multidisciplinary team
To participate in the training and supervision of all Specialist, foundation, and core trainees under your responsibility.

There are up to two on call rotas. There is the emergency on call rota at the QE based on two consultants being on call at a time and sharing the nights. On call is Monday to Thursday, and the Friday to Sunday the following weekend. This is no elective work scheduled when on call and the Friday to Monday after the weekday on call is scheduled as a day off (after the morning handover).

For those with a Lower GI interest there may be another on call at Solihull Hospital around the elective patients on that site. This is Monday to Sunday and is shared by all of the colorectal consultants at the two main hospital sites.

The post holders will be required to undertake any other duties and responsibilities that fall within the broad framework of the post.

The locum post is to cover current sickness however the service has the view to establishing a EGS service with substantive consultants in the near future. These consultants would also have a major role in developing the EGS service. The posts will also have a significant input into the elective surgery with the future, substantive post holders being able to provide complex, specialist, surgery if that is what they would choose to do.
