Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Medical Retina and Uveitis at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

This is a replacement post of a retiring Medical Retina consultant, with some sessions supporting the Queen Elizabeth hospital Uveitis service. The successful applicant will be expected to establish a service to help meet the clinical requirements of a busy medical retinal and uveitis service. It is anticipated that the post holder will have post-CCT subspecialty training in Medical Retina and/or Uveitis. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the research portfolio of the department. Whilst most sessions are likely to take place at QEHB, there may be a clinical need for sessions to also be at any of the other Trust hospital sites : Heartlands Hospital Birmingham (HHB), Solihull Hospital (SH) and Good Hope Hospital (GHH).

The post will be based on a full time 10 PA contract for a fixed period of 12 months.

The successful candidate will also be expected to manage some of the in-patient acute referrals, but there are no regular on-call duties.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a highly motivated Medical Retina and Uveitis team in a large teaching hospital, who care for patients with complex medical retina and inflammatory eye conditions.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to establish a service to help meet the clinical requirements of a busy medical retinal and uveitis service. They will oversee outpatient medical retina and uveitis clinics, as well as managing the ophthalmic care of hospital in-patients. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will also perform regular local anaesthetic cataract surgery. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the research portfolio of the department.

It is anticipated that the post holder will have post-CCT subspecialty training in Medical Retina and/or Uveitis. They will need to have FRCOphth or equivalent and be registered with the UK GMC.

Flexibility of the timetabling of fixed sessions is expected. We are working towards a three session day so some of the timetabled fixed sessions may be evening sessions and/or weekend sessions. We are also increasing our provision of community ophthalmology and thus clinics may include review of remotely acquired investigations. Flexible/annualised sessions may be included for some theatre sessions to support the department to maximise theatre capacity for patients.

The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to both undergraduate and post graduate teaching in the department.
