Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics - Traumaplasty

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 01 October 2024

Job summary

The unit currently has the highest demand in the UK for hip fracture management and the departments ambitious vision is to expand the service to include the management of femoral fragility periprosthetic/interprosthetic fractures.

The successful candidate would class themself as a traumaplasty surgeon and must have experience in the fixation of peri/interprosthetic femoral fractures using modern MIPPO techniques. They are also expected to have experience in lower limb revision arthroplasty including proximal and distal femoral replacements. The successful candidates will also provide elective primary and revision lower limb arthroplasty activity.

The posts will support the departments needs as well as capabilities within the full range of general Trauma & Orthopaedic on-call work, including adult and paediatric trauma, outside referrals and in-house emergencies.

The trust is a Major Trauma Centre and is one of the busiest elective centres in England. The T&O department delivers services across multiple sites, so the applicant will be expected to work on different sites as part of their normal job plan.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be working alongside two other committed fragility fracture surgeons to develop the service in all areas. They will be supported to maintain an elective practice in either revision hip or knee arthroplasty if desired.

It is expected that they would have highly developed skills in both trauma and revision arthroplasty through the completion of post CCT/CESR fellowship training. They should be committed to and have a track record of team working for managing complex clinical problems.

A high level of proficiency in communication and the management of change is expected.

Our department wishes to become one of the leading centres for training promising young surgeons and an appetite for training and providing high quality education to the next generation of surgeons is desirable.
