Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Fellowship in advanced otology for a 12 month period, under the Trust's Junior Specialist Doctor Terms & Conditions of Service. The post is suitable for doctors who have completed their SpR or equivalent training and are seeking to extend their experience prior to applying for a Consultant post with a subspecialist interest in Otology. The post will provide a great opportunity to receive further specialist training.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with a team of five Consultant Otologists and will be primarily based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The Otology group provide secondary care to South Birmingham and tertiary services to the population of the West Midlands. The Otology unit comprises general otology and specialist ear services. The fellow will be exposed to multidisciplinary team working in a variety of clinic and theatre settings including lateral skull base, auditory implantation, balance, NF2, hereditary paraganglioma and facial palsy.

Applicants are expected to have obtained the FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent. It is preferred, but not essential, that applicants hold a Certificate of Completion of Training.

Whilst the post does not carry a National Training Number, the post holder will have a formal monthly meeting with Mr R Irving to monitor progress and to ensure appropriate support and opportunities are being given. At the commencement of the post an Educational Contact will be agreed between Mr Irving and the Fellow and Mr Irving will provide educational support taking the role of educational supervisor to the fellow. The Fellow will be required to undergo formal appraisal using the Trust's Medic-at-work assessment tool. The post holder will also be allocated sessions for CPD for research and audit activities. The post holder will be entitled to 10 days of study leave during the year fellowship.
