Consultant Cardiac Surgeon with an interest in mitral valve surgery, transplantation and mechanical support
The post involves working within the department to provide clinical care for elective and emergency cardiac surgical patients. The appointee will also be responsible for working with colleagues to strengthen and further develop treatment for mitral valve disease. The on-call rota is 1 in 7 for general cardiac surgical emergencies and cardiothoracic trauma. The post also includes a commitment to the adult cardiopulmonary transplant and mechanical support service.
The job plan will be based on 10 PAs with the possibility to increase this to 12 by mutual agreement. It includes fixed operating lists and a weekly out-patient clinic as well as departmental clinical and quality of care meetings. The transplant component includes weekly meetings and involvement in the implantation rota.
Main duties of the job
The appointee must be adequately trained in adult cardiac surgery and transplantation and be on the GMC Specialist Register. They must have sufficient ability and experience to manage and operate independently on routine elective and emergency patients. Experience in mitral valve surgery including complex mitral valve reconstruction will be highly desirable. They will need experience in retrieval, both DBD and DCD, and heart and lung implantation surgery as well as all aspects of mechanical support.
In addition, they should be able to manage their own time and work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team. They must be compassionate and a good communicator with evidence of good leadership skills. A working knowledge of the role and importance of management in the NHS is required. The appointee should be able to demonstrate experience in directing, leading and teaching medical, nursing and other professions allied to medicine as well as experience in research and quality improvement.
The appointee will have responsibility for patients under his/her care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure and take part in the on call rota for transplantation and mechanical support as well as cardiac surgical emergencies.
They will play a role in meeting the Department's contracted obligations for the provision of cardiac surgery services and in ensuring that the overall performance of the unit meets appropriate quality criteria.
