The Medical Education Department is responsible for ensuring the delivery and quality management of education and training for approximately 1800 Junior Doctors (doctors in training and locally employed doctors) placed across all specialities within the Trust.
The Postgraduate Medical Education Teaching Fellow will be responsible for providing high quality surgical skills and evidence based high fidelity and part task Simulation Based Education with a focus on surgical specialities. They are to maintain clinical currency and a portfolio of practice appropriate to their specialist clinical area. They are responsible for functioning as a key member of the UHB simulation faculty and clinical education service, ensuring quality standards are maintained. This unique post offers an exciting opportunity for surgical trainees to develop their experience and skills as medical educators within simulation-based education working closely with the Clinical Education and General Surgery Department.
Main duties of the job
To develop and direct a multi-professional faculty responsible for the provision of cross-specialty simulation-based education.
To work collaboratively with the Clinical Service Lead for Clinical Skills and Simulation to devise and implement technology enhanced training curricula which meet the requirements of the commissioning institutions and further the Trust reputation as a major clinical teaching provider.
To foster a culture of active research and to contribute to the current evidence base, evaluating how technological approaches to learning can continuously improve patient care, though individual and team performance.
Alongside the Clinical Skills and Simulation Service Lead, identify the opportunities for collaborative work in the region to strengthen the simulation activity leading to effective workforce development plans.
To represent the trusts simulation service on regional, national and international forums, taking active role in marketing the UHB brand as a leader in care, clinical excellence and education.
To contribute to trust wide laparoscopic surgical programmes ensuring an equitable, quality assured offer across all sites.
To contribute to the development of new speciality programmes being developed as a part of the trust wide surgical training recovery plan.
Support the core surgical high fidelity simulation programmes run across the trust offering surgical specialist knowledge and experience to advise on the maintenance and development of programmes.

The successful candidate should also demonstrate leadership skills, the ability to communicate affectively and work to an excellent standard within the multidisciplinary clinical and educational team. The post holder will also take responsibility for maintaining a clinical portfolio of practice through engaging in regular clinical activity to maintain clinical competence as discussed and agreed with line management and clinical supervisors.
To work closely with the Postgraduate Medical Education teaching leads to audit, develop and improve the teaching offered by the Trust. This may be through an audit or piece of research into the teaching activities.
The post-holder will have an educational supervisor to support development in delivering simulation-based surgical education, following completion of the trust faculty development framework. Support will also be offered to complete a qualification in medical education. There is an expectation of collating all current data in simulation, analysis of work with the opportunity to present work at local, national or potentially international conferences.
