Job description

Job responsibilities

The department of dermatology at Solihull, Good Hope and Heartlands Hospitals is the largest department of dermatology in the Midlands and one of the busiest specialist dermatology departments in the United Kingdom. We serve a local, regional and supra-regional referral base commensurate with the broad range of subspecialty expertise and clinics offered. We host training posts for the West Midlands Dermatology Training scheme, as well as rotations for undergraduate medical trainees from the University of Birmingham. New appointees will be supported by a range of allied staff including administrative team members, a skin cancer nurse consultant and specialist nurses delivering phototherapy, systemic immunosuppression and isotretinoin clinics, photodynamic therapy, diphenylcyclopropenone, skin surgery, specialist cancer nursing, the NCG-funded highly specialised Epidermolysis Bullosa service. A dedicated dermatology pharmacist has recently been appointed. New appointees will have access to mentorship. We are a friendly, dynamic and forward-looking department seeking to further develop our reputation within the trust and nationally.

The new department of dermatology at Solihull Hospital is a bespoke facility developed in 2015, representing an approximate 4 million capital investment and offering an excellent environment in which to deliver high quality clinical care. There is dedicated separate consultant and secretarial office space equipped with computers and printers, as well as further hot-desking workspaces within the department. Remote access to trust IT platforms via VPN is available if required.

Clinics at Good Hope Hospital are held on the ground floor of a modern outpatient space in the Treatment Centre, with further "hot desk" office space on the first floor.

Clinics are also held within Paediatrics at Solihull and Heartlands Hospitals and HIV clinics at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

We provide an on-call inpatient service for acute and emergency dermatology across all 3 hospital sites. There is a shared out-of-hours pan-Birmingham on-call rota shared with Birmingham City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital.

We have developed strong links with the University of Birmingham, with members of our team leading diverse projects under the auspices of the Dermatology Research Group.

We work closely with our counterparts at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, particularly in the setting of advanced cutaneous malignancy and cutaneous lymphoma, as well as in ensuring equity of access to dermatology care across our region.

Rising demand for our services has prompted us to seek new ways of working to maximise our clinical efficiency. To this end, we undertake some clinics outside of traditional 9am-5pm weekday working hours. New appointees would be expected to demonstrate a willingness to partake in future 3-session workday timetables or weekend working for elective activity, at more than one hospital site, with time off-in lieu at other times in the week as appropriate. We currently undertake some skin cancer tele dermatology triage appointments on a virtual basis.
