University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Locum Consultant in Heart Transplantation and Cardiac Imaging

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

The appointee will be expected to support the Heart Transplant Service by delivering outpatient clinics for post-transplant continuing care, in- and out-patient care of patients with advanced heart failure, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, and clinical and governance meetings. The appointee's sub-specialty interest in cardiac imaging will support weekly transplant assessment MDTs. We would support the appointee in developing specific areas of expertise related to heart transplantation such as transition care, obstetric and reproductive health. Out-patient clinics can be adapted to provide sub-specialist care.

There are daily consultant-led ward rounds for all in-patients including patients on the ward, coronary care unit and intensive care unit. The appointee would be expected to support these ward rounds. At weekends, the 4 Transplant Physicians -2 heart and 2 lung transplant physicians, deliver weekend rounds and the appointee would be expected to join the rota 1.5.

The timetable includes cardiac MRI reporting sessions for the appointee to pursue the cardiac imaging sub-specialty interest. We would encourage the appointee, over time, to develop advanced cardiac imaging for heart transplant recipients (eg non-invasive diagnosis of acute rejection), including the potential development of CT coronary angiography for assessment of graft vasculopathy.

Main duties of the job

The department of cardiology is now a foundation group, so the organisational and financial management of the department is directly undertaken by consultants with support from management and finance. The post holder would be expected to take on some of these roles. Clinical leadership by consultant staff is very important in meeting all the challenges of the changing healthcare environment.

The post holder must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and is advised to maintain up to date membership of a recognised medical defence organisation. The appointee will be required to live within a distance that allows the appointee safely to fulfil their clinical commitments as agreed with the Medical Director.

An applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed with the Trust on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.

The successful candidate is expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and comply with the standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust. In particular where the Consultant manages employees of the Trust, he/she will be expected to observe the local employment and personnel policies and procedures.
