Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

Do you have a passion for Parenteral Nutrition (PN), Intestinal Failure (IF) and nutrition support? Due to new funding an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Dietitian to work within the Nutrition Support Team MDT. This consists of Gastroenterologists, Nutrition Nurses, Pharmacists, Psychologists and Dietetic Department colleagues.

The successful candidate will be an essential member of the IF team, playing a crucial role in the assessment of patients with highly complex nutritional requirements, metabolic instability and complex surgical and medical conditions. Assessment includes the use of biochemistry, anthropometry and up to date technology such as bioelectrical impedance to underpin clinical decision making. Translating the most up to date clinical research, the IF dietitian uses advanced decision-making skills to calculate nutritional, fluid and electrolyte requirements in patients with IF and recommend the optimal prescription. This involves using the safest and most effective method of delivery for patients, that may be enteral, parenteral or a hybrid regimen.

The successful candidate will work alongside an established Clinical Specialist Intestinal Failure Dietitian and training will be offered and provided, where necessary.

The trust strives to encourage research and innovation and is committed to providing opportunities to encourage professional and personal development. The successful candidate will be supported in having their personal development goals fulfilled.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to attend daily Nutrition Support ward rounds where patients with Intestinal Failure are seen, as well as complex enteral patients. You will be expected to assess the nutritional status of patients based on anthropometric measurements, biochemical markers, diet history and other validated methods of nutritional assessment.

You will advise on appropriate artificial feeding routes for patients across all disciplines experiencing difficulties with feeding or meeting their nutritional requirements because of surgery or complex gastrointestinal disease. you will then be expected to formulate individualised evidence-based patient care plans and parenteral nutrition prescriptions, taking into consideration patient anatomy, prescribed drugs, biochemical derangements, metabolic complications, access issues etc.

You will also be expected to be familiar with more complex forms of enteral feeding including enteroclysis and fistuloclysis, as well as chyme recycling. Furthermore,

You will also be expected to attend weekly Home Parenteral Nutrition Clinics, weekly MDT's and liaise regularly with a range of disciplines across all specialities in addition to providing a specialist dietetic outpatient service.

The post is permanent and full time (37.5 hours) although applications are welcomed for any part time/job share opportunities. If you have any questions please contact Dan Griffith (dan.griffith@uhb.nhs.uk)
