Job summary
We are excited to invite applications for a substantive Sarcoma Consultant, part of the wider General Surgery team. The General Surgery directorate consists of Surgeons based at the Queen Elizabeth site. The directorate also includes 3 existing substantive Sarcoma Consultants, 5 substantive Upper GI Consultants and 12 substantive Lower GI Consultants based at the Queen Elizabeth site. This post will be based at the QE site primarily. The junior doctor team includes senior clinical fellows and various grades of Junior Doctors. The unit has inpatient beds allocated on the new partnership wards at the adjacent Harborne Hospital.
The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service. Subject to the provisions of the terms and conditions of service, the post holder must observe agreed policies and procedures on clinical matters and should follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Hospital. This is to support the development of evidence-based medicine and is not intended to constrain individual consultant freedom.
Main duties of the job
To ensure that clinical services are efficiently administered
To maintain CPD
To participate actively in clinical governance
To develop audit / research interests within the resources available
The post holders will be required to undertake any other duties and responsibilities that fall within the broad framework of the post.
As this is a post in a developing Trust structure, the role will be reviewed from time to time and the post holder is expected to respond flexibly to develop this and/or other roles to enable the Trust to meet differing priorities.
The consultant will participate on the on-call rota. The on call is structured as 4 days on call during week one (Monday -- Thursday) and 3 days on call the following weekend (Friday -- Sunday). No elective work is routinely scheduled during the on call period. The on call week is shared with a buddy Consultant (2nd on call) who is the consultant designated for the emergency theatre. First and second Consultant on call alternate their roles every 12 weeks. Further details and any clarification can be discussed with the CSL.

The candidate should be a surgeon specialised in soft-tissue sarcoma with the focus on retroperitoneal sarcoma and should have a clear academic interest. It is expected that the successful candidate will have undertaken dedicated sarcoma fellowships/training in major institutions. The candidate must demonstrate evidence of having performed retroperitoneal sarcoma surgery for liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and other histologies. Experience should include the performance of compartmental resections and major vascular resections. It is also essential that the candidate can independently perform surgery for trunk/abdominal wall/groin/extremities soft tissue sarcoma. It is expected that the candidate will demonstrate a strong academic CV in sarcoma, predominantly retroperitoneal sarcoma, including peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals and presentations at international conferences.
Aside from the sarcoma elective work, the candidate needs to demonstrate their ability to independently run the on-call in emergency surgery.
