Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Junior Specialist Doctor (Higher) in Gastroenterology to work at registrar level. Duties will include active participation in the daily care of inpatients at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham or Heartlands Hospital; The JSD will be responsible together with SpR and FY2/FY1s. Consultant cover is always available including a 24/7 on-call. You will be asked to cover Gastroenterology ward and participate with Medical on-call duties when required. The Trust has a firm commitment in improvement of the quality of patient care and enthusiastic candidate will benefit by getting involved in audit and quality improvement projects (QIPs) as well as existing educational and research initiatives.

Main duties of the job

The post is normal working day 0900 to 1700 plus out of hours duties according to the general medical rota. The post offers particularly good experience of the care of all patients that present to the gastroenterology unit (acute GI bleeds, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition and liver disease) and the general medical take.

There are ample educational activities and the job is particularly good for those wishing to gain a broad experience of general medicine and gastroenterology in preparation for the membership of the Royal College of Physicians.

The post will require work at nights and weekends on the SpR on-call rota for acute medicine in Clinical Decisions Unit, and the daytime week-end Gastroenterology SpR rota in the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital or Heartlands Hospital.

As well as SpR colleagues, the post provides support to IMT, FY2 and FY1 doctors in caring for Gastroenterogy inpatients.
