Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to join our existing team of Acute Medicine Consultants at Good Hope Hospital. We currently have a team of 18 Consultants with areas of special interest including Respiratory, Diabetes, Renal and Intensive Care.

Our department includes a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), inpatient beds on our Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Short Stay wards as well as a Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).

Opportunities for teaching are available in our simulation suite and clinical skills area. Other areas of special interest are encouraged.

Standard job plan of 10pa, the exact job plans will be agreed with the successful candidates.

The appointees must have necessary qualifications and should either be on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of the interview.

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL CARE

*To have oversight of all team activity during that clinical session, and provide support to other registered and non-registered clinical practitioners when needed.

*To provide appropriate supervisions to junior doctors, ACPs and clinical practitioners

*Administrative duties related to patient care

*Contribution to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education activity, including AHPs as part of the multidisciplinary team.

*Regular participation in departmental and directorate meetings.

*Consultants are encouraged and supported with research projects.

*Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.

*To help the department and Trust in emergencies.

*Appropriate evening and weekend on-call commitments.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities include ward rounds of our footprint of 90 inpatient beds, assessment of new and follow up patients presenting to same day emergency care(SDEC) and full participation in the Acute Medical on call rota covering 0800-1600, 1400-2200 and 1600-000 shifts. Weekend ward rounds are included on a 1 in 6 basis

*All consultants in the department are managerially accountable through the Clinical Service Leads to the CDG Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.

*Candidates are required to hold CCT or equivalent in Acute Medicine.

*The successful candidates will provide necessary educational and clinical supervision for junior doctors and other health professionals working in their team. In addition, participation in the departmental and Trust wide teaching programmes for the relevant junior medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary teams is expected

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

*Consultants are key members of the Directorate Team and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.

*To support the Clinical Service Leads in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Directorate Management Team.

*To contribute to the leadership and development of Services under the direction of the Clinical Service Leads and Medical Director and in line with the Trust's business plans.

EFFORT

*The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate including support to the General Manager and Group Support Managers to achieve their objectives. Work in collaboration with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.

*Work within the Trust's framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and to supervise or lead quality improvement projects and audits.

*The list is not exhaustive and all these would be discussed and a Job Plan agreed at the start.

*The appointee will be managerially, but not clinically, accountable to the CDG Medical Director and Clinical Service Lead
