Job summary
The successful applicant will join a team of Cranial Consultants providing a comprehensive general and specialist cranial services to the wider community. In the Department cranial and spinal services work as independent services with regards to provision of both elective and emergency with separate on call rotas.
The post holder will be based within the Cranial services for all elective and emergency activities with general cranial 1:9 Neurosurgery on call rota.
The post holder will be required to work within the sub- speciality interest as advertised above i.e Neurovascular (Additional interest within skull base will be considered).Candidate will be required to have a proven track record of competency expected at post CCT/post fellowship level for the subspecialty interest as advertised. .
The Department of Neurosurgery is located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham utilising facilities within the New QEHB Building and the Short Stay Unit (SSU) within the Heritage Building. We are recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for the delivery of outstanding care and treatment for brain cancer patients.
The hospital has been designated as a level one trauma unit, leading to increased emergency work in the department. QEHB already has special expertise in the management of all forms of trauma, as a result of its links with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM), which is located in the hospital.
Main duties of the job
*Knowledge for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical conditions, with specialist interest in Cranial Neuro-vascular. Additional interest in Cranial Skull Base will be considered.
*Commitment to support long established Interventional Neuroradiology service.
*Commitment to team work and support Neurovascular Specialist nurse.
*Commitment to lead weekly Neurovascular MDT.
*Knowledge of neurosurgical patient pathways to support appropriate and timely emergency and elective care.
*Extensive experience of pre and post-operative care of neurosurgical patients.
*Excellent communication skills for speaking to patients, families and carers; medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues, support teams and a wide range of other parties in a healthcare setting.
*Ability to adapt to a changing environment as healthcare evolves
*Commitment to and enthusiasm for learning new skills and techniques and supporting their introduction into the neurosurgical department.
*Leadership skills to manage your team and support trainees.
*The ability to engage with and inspire confidence in others.
*The emotional resilience to support your team in sometimes difficult circumstances
