Junior Specialist Doctor (Higher) in Neurosurgery - Aug 2023
This job is now closed
Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Junior Specialist Doctor, to work at Higher level within the Neurosurgery Department, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
This appointment is suitable for a candidate with previous experience working at a registrar level.
The Neurosurgical Department at the QEHB has undergone a planned expansion in Junior Doctors as it is now a Major Trauma Centre. This follows years of steady growth in response to clinical demand and the close relationship with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in treating injured military personnel. The Department is now located within the newly constructed QEHB with dedicated Neurosurgical wards, ITU, theatres and interventional Neuroradiology.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate(s) will join a dynamic team of training and non-training registrars who cover the Greater Birmingham region population of approximately 4.5 million. The Department covers Neurosurgical sub-specialty interests including Skull Base, Neuro-Vascular, CSF, Cranial and Spinal Trauma, and Complex Spine. The links to the RCDM also provide an opportunity to manage complex head and spine trauma that is not normally encountered in the UK civilian population.
We will offer:
*Training in an internationally recognised Neurosurgical unit -- the posts are intended to ST3 and above candidates. We will try to accommodate subspecialist interests but allocations will be based on service requirements (cranial or spinal).
*Research and publication opportunities -- the Department has close links to the University of Birmingham with special research interests in Neuro-Oncology and Neuro-Trauma. JSD's are fully supported to attend appropriate courses and conferences.
*Teaching -- the candidate will join a Department with dedicated weekly teaching sessions aimed at covering topics relevant to the FRCS examination. They will be expected to participate in all aspects of teaching/presentations and audits.
*Theatre experience will be plentiful with 3 elective theatres and 1 dedicated emergency Neurosurgical theatre.
*Supervision will be provided but eventual independence in operating on appropriate theatre cases will be expected.
