Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic, proactive registered nurse to join an established Respiratory Specialist Nursing Team as a Band 7.

The Bronchiectasis CNS provides care for patients with bronchiectasis and range of respiratory disorders and will be instrumental in enabling the expansion of the existing service. The successful applicant will be expected to have experience at Band 6 Respiratory CNS level although specialist training will be given. You will work within the existing Respiratory Nurse specialist service.

You will be expected to exercise a high degree of professional autonomy by making critical judgements using specialist knowledge and be responsible for assessing patients and subsequently devising, implementing and reassessing an individual's treatment plan.

The post holder must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable them to be involved in difficult conversations regarding treatment and living with respiratory disease

Main duties of the job

Lead on/assist the service lead on the development of the Bronchiectasis service within the Respiratory nursing service at Heartlands Hospital and provide a wide and in-depth knowledge and experience of all aspects of Respiratory care and management including COPD and Oxygen

Lead on and provides a prompt review of respiratory inpatients, facilitating discharge and reducing length of stay and supporting medical staff, nurses and other health care professionals in managing complex patients.

Undertakes complex nurse led clinics and MDT autonomously using higher levels of decision making and clinical judgement. Reviewing patient's progress and or change, making appropriate amendments to care or treatment, assess complex presentations and ensure correct diagnosis, looking at differential diagnoses and challenge other assessments and consider alternative treatments. Undertake invasive procedures such as accessing and flushing of TIVAD (Total implanted venous access devices), insertion of Midlines/cannulas, arterial and capillary blood gases and venous blood sampling. Undertakes procedures which may include spirometry and reversibility testing, bloods, sputum culture and inhaler techniques / device selection.

Uses expert knowledge and skills to determine appropriate diagnostic tools and interpret results.

Provides written self-management plans to help empower the patient to manage their Respiratory disease.
