Job summary
This post is for a full time fixed term consultant in Obstetrics. There are 10 Programmed activities: 9 direct clinical care and 1 supporting professional activities.
The post holder will have experience of working in a high risk obstetric unit, undertaking C-sections, antenatal clinics, and ward rounds. The post holder will have a key role in the ultrasound diagnosis of fetal abnormality and normality, multiple pregnancies, including the ongoing surveillance of fetal wellbeing, particularly in the presence of fetal growth restriction, the planning and timing of delivery in these patients, management of multiple pregnancies and in working as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop and maintain excellent clinical performance of the unit.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the continued development obstetrics and gynaecology services. S/he will share the management of admitted patients and will provide care for his/her patients admitted to the Trust. S/he will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide continuity of care for patients. The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Service Lead for Obstetrics to provide safe care and meet national and local safety and performance indicators.
Main duties of the job
The post will have responsibility with a team of consultants to provide integrated care for the Obstetrics service, including support to specialist nurses and midwives who work in the clinical areas. The post holder will be able to work in a high risk setting. There are active research and development opportunities within the service and it is anticipated that the successful appointee will contribute to this.
The post holder will have access to a networked Trust computer and training for UHB hospital network applications as well as designated secretarial support (combination of designated secretary and digital dictation support) and defined office space in the specialty area that is present in the Princess of Wales Women's Unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. This comprises desk space in an open plan area with access to meeting rooms for private meetings and quiet work.

OBSTETRICS
There are two Obstetrics units serving approximately 9,000 births per annum at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital. At Solihull Hospital, there is a standalone Birthing Unit which provides midwifery led care for low risk women.
Birmingham Heartlands Hospital
The Obstetric service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is located within the Princess of Wales Women's Unit. There are 46 obstetric inpatient beds situated on the first floor of the unit. The ground floor comprises the Antenatal Clinic, Ultrasound Department, Day Assessment Unit, Delivery Suite and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3).
The Delivery Suite has 13 delivery rooms, (including two emergency theatres and two HDU rooms). There is a 4 bedded Pregnancy Assessment and Emergency Room with its own patient waiting area, 6 beds for induction of labour on the labour ward.
There is a midwifery led unit (Willow Suite) comprising 3 rooms with en-suite bathroom facilities. One room has a birthing pool and is predicted to deliver approximately 1,200 women per year.
There is a theatre on the first floor dedicated to elective caesarean section theatre running 5 days per week.
Solihull Hospital
The midwifery led unit has 4 multi-purpose beds. Two of these have birthing pools, and all have en-suite bathroom facilities. The vision for this unit is to provide 1 to 1 midwifery care in labour for a small selected low risk population. Protocols are in place for transfer from Solihull MLU to Heartlands which is 7 miles (approximately 20 minutes by blue light ambulance). There is a dedicated antenatal clinic, gynaecology clinic and ultrasound department.
Good Hope Hospital
The Maternity Unit includes 1 maternity ward with a total of 24; as well as a Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC) and a Midwifery Led Birthing Unit, which was opened in 2021.. There is also a delivery suite, with 10 rooms, and a birthing pool inclusive of 2 theatres and a high dependency room, a dedicated antenatal clinic area, with a comprehensive ultrasound facility integral within the clinic area and a day care antenatal unit. There is also a neonatal intensive care unit/special care (level 1) located within the maternity building.
GYNAECOLOGY
There is one gynaecology ward; ward 2 at the Good Hope Hospital site which manages the inpatient elective and emergency activity, together alongside a co-located Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU), with early pregnancy assessment unit.
There is a GAU situated in the Princess of Wales Women's Unit at Heartlands Hospital which provides clinical care for early pregnancy, recurrent miscarriage and non-pregnant pathways.
At Solihull, the outpatient procedure suite, known as the 'Care 4' Suite, has facilities for colposcopy, Outpatient hysteroscopy, fertility investigation and treatment, Urogynae clinics, vulval clinics, menopause and general gynaecology outpatients.
