Job summary
Applications are sought for the appointment of a Consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon with specific sub specialty interest to join the Birmingham Vascular Centre (BVC). We are a large and supportive vascular unit with an international reputation. If you are ready to work as part of a team of Vascular Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists delivering the full range of cutting edge endovascular and open surgical treatments to a diverse population in the middle of the UK then we want to hear from you. The BVC delivers a comprehensive vascular service across the whole of Birmingham and surrounding areas, covering a combined population of approximately 2.4million. The arterial site at Heartlands Hospital has a consultant of the week on call rota delivering emergency vascular care. Spoke sites exist at City, Good Hope, Sandwell, Queen Elizabeth and Solihull Hospitals delivering outpatient, day case and ambulatory care. The successful candidate will work equitably as part of the consultant team delivering local care to patients and designing the service of the future. The BVC provides access to a full range of vascular therapies for patients with vascular disease. There is a well-established service for both open and endovascular interventions for patients with aneurysmal and occlusive arterial disease, supported by a hybrid operating theatre at the HGS site together with access to interventional radiology rooms, an open surgical theatre, a dedicated ward and a Vascular Enhanced Care Unit.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will provide vascular surgical services at sites at both UHB and Sandwell and West Birmingham Trust Foundation Trust. The final job plan will be agreed with the CSL (Martin Claridge). The appointment is offered at 10 PAs, with dedicated SPAs for revalidation. This is in line with the other substantive consultant appointments.
The job plan will consist of appropriate clinic, theatre and endovascular sessions to deliver the respective caseload effectively. Main and hybrid theatre sessions are allocated as a full day list. The appointment will have mentoring support including sessions of dual operating with more senior colleagues as needed. The post has clerical and administrative support including a named secretary. Office space and IT equipment are allocated for these posts. Travel time is built into clinical sessions, with the emphasis on minimising the number of sites a consultant visits on any particular day (usually only one site visited per day). Administration time is similarly built into clinical sessions (particularly clinics). Further administration time is provided during our weekly The arterial site is covered by an on call team including a vascular consultant and registrar free of elective commitments. Their responsibilities include the care of all vascular inpatients. The successful candidates will participate in an equitable share of a 24 hour vascular out of hours on call roster covering weekdays and weekends 365 days a year, supported by a vascular registrar.
