Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has a large portfolio of clinical trials involving medicinal products and pharmacy has a key role in ensuring that clinical trial medications are handled safely and in line with UK legislation.

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacist to join the Pharmacy trials team based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

The Trust hosts a large number of commercial and non-commercially sponsored cancer clinical trials. With the increase in the number and complexity of our cancer trials portfolio, we are looking to increase capacity within the team to continue supporting the set up and delivery of studies within this speciality.

It is a very exciting time to be joining the team with our growing advanced therapy trial portfolio. You will have the opportunity to work within the multidisciplinary team and local 3rd party providers to deliver and offer these innovative new treatments to our patients.

There will also be opportunities to progress your knowledge and skills within the role through various nationally recognised training and qualifications.

Main duties of the job

You will be a key member of the pharmacy trials team, working closely with our research teams based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and our external research partners helping set up and deliver cancer trials to our patients.

You will be responsible for a portfolio of cancer trials and will:

review trial protocols to assess capacity and capability, through effective communication and negotiation with the clinical and aseptic technical teams, the wider multidisciplinary research teams, R&D, trial sponsors and clinical research organisations.

ensure the smooth set up and delivery of these trials to ensure that medications being used within trials are appropriately prescribed and handled in a safe and timely manner in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), local SOPs in both the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Dispensary and Pharmacy Aseptic Unit.

be required to supervise other staff within the trials team and wider pharmacy and nursing teams delivering these trials, as required.

You will be expected to have some knowledge and experience within the oncology/haematology and aseptics specialities; however, experience of working within clinical trials is not required as full training will be provided.
