Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join the award-winning UveitisTeam at QE Hospital Birmingham (UHB) due to the service expanding in clinical,research and educational domains.

We provide tertiary-level uveitis care across South Birmingham,with dedicated clinics for specific rare uveitis syndromes (notably Birdshot Chorioretinopathy and Punctate Inner Choroidopathy) which are conducted in the state-of-the-art Centre for Rare Diseases.We are a prescribing centre for biologics (adalimumab and biosimilars) in uveitis.We have a longstanding reputation for patient engagement and education,and co-lead the Birmingham Patient Involvement Group in Uveitis (PInGU).In the UK Ophthalmology Honours (Best Ophthalmology Team 2019), we were described as "An inspirational best practice highlighting an excellent multi-disciplinary service,a cohesive team and clear results in setting up this complex speciality."

In the research domain we are known for our work on quantitative imaging and the development and evaluation of novel endpoints to improve clinical care and trials in uveitis.We are also the UK coordinating centre for international clinical trials from the MUST group, including the current MERIT and ADVISE trials.We also have a deep interest in the application of clinical informatics and machine learning approaches to uveitis,medical retina and other ophthalmic applications,and host the Health Data Research Hub for Eye Health,INSIGHT,in a partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital NHSFT

Main duties of the job

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and is one of the leading hospitals in Europe. We have an international reputation for quality of care, information technology, clinical training and research. QEHB provides direct clinical services to nearly 700,000 patients every year, serving a regional, national and international population. It is a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal transplant, burns and plastics and has the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe.

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Uveitis; this can be partnered with a secondary subspeciality such as inflammatory cornea, medical retina or medical ophthalmology. The successful candidate will join a team of 15 other NHS consultants at the QEHB site who provide an outpatient and surgical service. The entire range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics are provided and there is close communication with consultants in other specialities. The QEHB imaging facilities currently includes four Spectralis OCT including HRA-OCT for FFA/ICG and OCTA, two California UWF Optos and research access to FLEX mobile Spectralis and Anterion SS AS-OCT.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a clinical leadership role alongside the current Uveitis Clinical Lead, and support the multi-disciplinary uveitis service through close-working with the Uveitis Clinical Nurse Specialist and Administrative team; they would also be expected to participate in the clinical research studies, but with excellent support from the Ophthalmology Research Team and supervision from the study investigator(s).

This post is for 5PA substantive sessions by default, but the post would also be suitable for less than full-time working if desired.
