Job summary
University hospitals birmingham nhs trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in england, serving the populations of birmingham and solihull. The trust is composed of four main hospital sites; queen elizabeth hospital (qehb), heartlands hospital, good hope hospital and solihull hospital (hgs). The post-holder will be required to rotate across all sites although the main bases will be heartlands, good hope and solihull hospitals.The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The clinical chemistry department has recently undergone a total laboratory automation equipment refresh at heartlands hospital and solihull hospital, with refreshes underway at good hope this year. Equipment includes the abbott alinity c and i series analysers and the abbott a3600 track.The immunology department at heartlands hospital is the central location for immunology testing across uhb and has recently expanded its service to meet increased demand. Analysers include phadia immunocap, ds2 elisa and quanta-lyser. Specialist chemistry provides a wide range of services to the trust as well as other hospital trusts using specialist chromatography and mass spectrometry. Equipment includes thermo fisher cascadian, shimadzu hplc and sciex tandem mass spectrometry analysers, with tests ranging from plasma and urine metanephrines to the collection and analysis of patient sweat tests to name but a few.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy, friendly team and support our progressive department in providing high quality, timely and specialised services. We are ukas accredited to iso 15189 standards, mhra approved and ibms accredited for training.This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast-paced department that is continually growing, and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills.You must have a bsc in biomedical science or equivalent with hcpc registration.The department will consider a trainee biomedical scientist on a learning contract, in the view of completing their ibms pre-registration portfolio in the next 6-12 months and becoming a band 5 hcpc registered biomedical scientist. All candidates must have an ibms accredited degree.The laboratory operates a 24/7 service and, after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required - including weekends. Shifts include early (7:30-3:30pm), day (9:00-5:00pm), late (2:00-10:00pm) and nights (9:45pm-7:45am).
