Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to work within our Major Trauma Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. This permanent post enables the post-holder to practice specialist Occupational Therapy skills in the management of acute complex trauma patients including head injuries.

You will lead a team of Occupational Therapy staff based on the Trauma wards alongside an existing Band 7 Team Lead and be well supported by the Clinical Lead for Occupational Therapy, as well as the Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist for Neurosciences.

You will be required to work collaboratively with a highly specialised MDT, to manage a complex trauma caseload, taking a lead role in assessment and treatment planning. Supporting junior staff as required, offering supervision and appraisals, as well as supporting undergraduate students within their clinical placements.

Skills in specialist seating and positioning, with an understanding of the cognitive impact to patients is essential. Discharge planning across the region, working alongside the Complex Discharge Hub to support patient flow.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating and developing the clinical service in trauma and provide clinical leadership alongside the existing Band 7. The successful candidate will be required to lead a small team of occupational therapists, and influence a positive culture & environment.

Applicants must demonstrate specialist knowledge to include application of functional assessment, cognitive assessment, wheelchair and seating skills, evidenced based practice treatment approaches and have strong leadership skills. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a multi-professional team is essential

There is a strong emphasis on personal development with a training budget to support this. Evidence of service evaluation, audit and research is desirable.

Informal visits are strongly recommended prior to interview.

We would expect applicants to have excellent communication skills, a flexible and compassionate approach and the ability to work autonomously. You will have access to regular clinical supervision and a range of internal and external training opportunities, with a training budget to support this. A keen interest in evidence based practice, clinical education and leadership is essential.
