Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust and John Taylor Hospice are recruiting to a Consultant post in Supportive and Palliative Care. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team which is dynamic and values innovation focuses on delivering exceptional patient care and has close working links with local hospices. The service wishes to recruit to a 10PA Consultant role, however part-time candidates will also be considered and can be discussed further, with the Clinical Lead.

The role will be predominately based at Good Hope Hospital and John Taylor Hospice. Good Hope Hospital is situated in the leafy, suburban, Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield. Sutton Coldfield is linked by rail and bus route to the City Centre as well as having excellent motorway links to and from the city. Good Hope Hospital serves a catchment population of approx. 450,000 and provides acute and general medicine as well as other specialist services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will also be part of the Senior Medical Team at the John Taylor Hospice, based in Erdington. The Hospice was founded in 1910 and is now an independent registered charity, supporting a wide range of adult palliative diseases as well as providing holistic support to individuals, including families and carers.

The successful candidate can expect to work within an innovative and supportive team of Supportive and Palliative Care Consultants, Doctors and Nurses, whilst being supported by a dedicated admin team. The team also works closely with the Division 5 Management Team, working collaboratively to drive service innovation.

This is an exciting opportunity for a clinician to provide palliative medicine input to the hospital Supportive and Palliative Care Team at Good Hope Hospital and the community or inpatient unit teams at John Taylor Hospice.

The post will be hosted as an NHS post by University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHBFT) with their terms and conditions. There will be a focus within the job plan on work with the Supportive and Palliative Care Team at Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and as part of the senior Medical Team at John Taylor Hospice.

UHBFT has four hospital sites with consultant cover, a dedicated CNS team and other medical colleagues at each site. Similarly, John Taylor Hospice is merged with Birmingham St Mary's Hospice as part of the Hospice Charity Partnership, so the post holder will become part of a wider Hospital and Hospice Medical team who mutually support each other. There may, in exceptional circumstances, be a requirement for cross cover of colleagues based on sites other than GHH and JTH.

The post holder will join a telephone advisory 2nd on call rota, coordinated across Birmingham and Solihull, with colleagues from John Taylor Hospice, Birmingham St Mary's Hospice, Marie Curie Hospice West Midlands and University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHBFT). This responsibility is approx. 1 in 8 and attracts a 3% availability supplementation to annual salary and is currently under review.
