Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Clinical Scientist or Bioinformatician to develop and support scientific solutions in clinical computing at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
The Clinical Computer and Imaging Sciences Service (CCISS), part of the Department of Medical Physics, has a team of 10.3 scientists and technologists, largely based at the QEHB site. CCISS provides clinical computing and bioinformatics support to the Radiotherapy Physics, Radiotherapy, Radiation Protection and Imaging services, with a strong focus on radiotherapy. The large, specialist radiotherapy service at UHB delivers nationally leading levels of technical radiotherapy (IG-IMRT, SABR etc). Underpinning this, CCISS provides maintenance and support for clinical systems within the Radiotherapy pathway, including Mosaiq, Prosoma, RayStation, Oncentra, IView, XVI and an RT PACS. The service is also responsible for the integration into the healthcare environment of Tomotherapy and Cyberknife radiotherapy delivery systems. Reliable operation and inter-operability between all systems are high priorities for the CCISS team.
CCISS also provides support for the computing infrastructure of the HSE Approved Dosimetry Service for RRPPS, the regional specialist service for radiation safety and imaging quality assurance advice. In addition the CCISS team supports the research activities of the Imaging service at UHB via a dedicated research PACS.
Main duties of the job
You may be involved in
developing and implementing software solutions for scientific and clinical issues and integrating these into the patient pathway;
providing data extraction and analysis services for clinical and scientific problems;
ensuring seamless and safe working of all computing components required for treatment delivery or diagnosis;
providing virtualisation platforms for clinical system testing, training, research and development.
providing training for STP trainees in Clinical Bioinformatics and Medical Physics
We use and support a variety of open source and proprietary systems, requiring experience in SQL (MS SQL, MySQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python, VBA, JS, Lua) and web technologies. In house solutions have been developed using Java/JakartaEE and PostgreSQL.
It is expected that you will possess computing or bioinformatics experience in a clinical medical physics discipline, ideally in Radiotherapy/Medical Imaging, and you will be registered, or close to registration, as a Clinical Scientist. Candidates who are not yet registered, e.g. trainees on the STP Bioinformatics or Medical Physics programmes or those with an appropriate PhD, will be considered for appointment at the appropriate NHS banding at Annex 21.
