Duties of the post

1. To be responsible for the assessment and management of all patients under your care. To act as Responsible Clinician for all patients detained under the 1983 Mental Health Act, primarily Community Treatment Orders where in force. There are four patients on CTO within SE CMHT.

2. To provide psychiatric leadership to the multidisciplinary team and clinical leadership in collaboration with the team leader. The Consultant Psychiatrists responsibilities include treatment planning and regular reviews through outpatient contact or a multidisciplinary care programme approach that comprehensively address patients bio psychosocial needs.

3. Serving as psychiatric liaison with other agencies particularly with services such as primary care, obstetrics, midwifery, health visiting, child and family social services, infant psychiatry, acute liaison service

4.To work collaboratively with colleagues in primary and secondary care in assessing and managing patients within your catchment area, primarily for patients with severe and/or enduring mental health needs.

5. To offer comprehensive psychiatric assessments for patients with complex mental health issues, and to ensure that patients who require ongoing support and treatment from secondary mental health services, receive appropriate care and treatment.

6. To participate, and, where appropriate, to take the lead, in risk management and other multi-professional meetings concerning patients within your catchment area.

7.To carry out Mental Health Act Assessments as and when required, subject to the proviso that the Home Treatment doctors will be first point of contact for these.

8. To supervise non-training grade doctors and psychiatric trainees allocated to your team.

9. To enact cross cover arrangements for annual leave, study and professional, with the other Psychiatrists in your locality. Leave applications will be submitted to the Clinical Lead for authorisation once cross cover has been identified. Cover for long-term sick leave will not be expected via these cross-cover arrangements.

10. Participation in the psychiatric Consultant on-call duty rota which is 1:14. This rota covers both general adult, elderly psychiatric patients as well as Learning Disabilities.

11. To advise and assist in the planning of services.

12. To play an active part in psychiatric teaching. There is an active postgraduate teaching programme in psychiatry and there are opportunities to contribute to other academic meetings.

13. One hour per week supervision will be necessary as protected time for each trainee/Specialty doctor attached to this post.

14.Medical students from the Peninsula Medical School attend regularly to obtain psychiatric experience as an integral part of their training, and the post holder will be expected to participate in teaching and providing feedback sessions to these medical students.

15. An interest in research and a willingness to supervise trainees will be encouraged.

16. To establish effective working relationships with GPs, ensuring effective communication and to support the development of relationships within LSW.

17. To take an active interest in LSW management. The Consultant will work alongside the Clinical Lead and Locality Manager to ensure smooth functioning of the service. Livewell values the values of co-production and all senior doctors are encouraged to contribute to the strategic development of the service including STP workstreams, digital agenda and relationship with service users/carers as well as VCSE and individual departments from the local general hospital

18. Special emphasis on working within appropriate governance frameworks will be necessary in the area of the mental health act (including community treatment orders), mental capacity, choice and control and the safety of patients, carers, staff and the general community. Providing expertise, and fulfilling a statutory role, in managing medico-legal issues using Capacity and Mental Health legislation. There is regular feedback of learning from the local SIRI panel

19.To take part in an Annual Appraisal Programme, with the development of Personal Development Plans. Appraisal is provided by a locally trained and appointed peer.

20.To adhere to all the organisations policies and procedures. Flexibility to shape and respond to changing service requirements. To advise and assist in the planning of services. Setting goals and targets for the team according to local and national drivers.

21. To participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. LSW is committed to CPD and the study leave allocation is 33 days per three-year period. The organisation funds CPD for its Consultants and all routine Journal Clubs and Case Conferences are validated for Internal Module CPD. A substantial part of each Wednesday is set aside for CPD activities. One Consultant is the local CPD co-ordinator. Local Peer Groups are established, for the RCPsych CPD/PDP programme, and the appointee will be invited to join one of these. Study leave is part of the PDP and is discussed in Peer Group; applications are submitted to the Clinical Director for Mental Health and booked via the Medical Staffing Department.

• Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Psychiatry at the time of taking up the Post (Specialist Registrars applying in advance must be within six months of their CCT at the point of being interviewed)
• Eligibility for Section 12 and Approved Clinician Approval
• Extensive experience in Community/ Adult Psychiatry essential
• Knowledge of Mental Health legislation
• Participation in Continual Professional Development
• MDT working
• Ability to offer expert psychiatric opinion on full range of emergency and routine clinical situations
• Ability to apply evidence based approach to management of clinical problems
• Ability to teach undergraduates
• Ability to communicate with patients and staff, both orally and in writing, to a high standard
• Computer and IT skills
• Reliability
