Job responsibilities

Responsibility for People Management

Take responsibility for own personal and professional development, maintain competence,knowledge and skills commensurate with the role.

To support colleagues as a practice supervisor or supporting those completing thePreceptorship programme, including acting as a Preceptor in line with Livewell SWsPreceptorship Guidance document.

To be responsible for the continuing assessment of performance and the identification ofdevelopment needs of team members by:

Facilitating staff members to meet revalidation requirements.

Actively participating in the collation of forecast demands for continuous professionaldevelopment

To participate in providing instruction, learning opportunities, experience and training tohealth and social care staff and students, including those from other Livewell services, otherneuro services across the region, professional disciplines and colleges. Providing advice,specific training, guidance, the ability to reflect on professional and ethical issues andsignposting where appropriate.

Monitor standards, ensuring staff are aware of and follow professional, national and localstandards in partnership with clinical, practice and professional leads.

Provide professional clinical support to the MDT team and advise on practice, identifyingtraining needs of staff and encourage practitioners to develop skills in critical thinking andreflective practice, excellence in practice, specialist knowledge and research-based practice.

Act as a role model for all team members demonstrating and maintaining high standards ofpractice and professional conduct. Addressing issues of poor practice with senior linemanagement and HR.

To support with student placement and training in line with organisational policies andprocedures.

Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff or students

Receive line management support and supervision

To take responsibility and assist team leads with the recruitment process of junior staff e.g.taking part in interview panels, induction process and engaging with preceptorshipprogrammes.

Responsibility for financial and/or physical resources

The post holder will have no direct responsibility for finances; however, they will adhere tothe relevant trust policies on financial issues

The post holder will use Livewell Southwest resources responsibly ensuring that resourcesare utilised effectively to meet changing service needs.

To ensure all equipment and relevant clinical stock is accounted for, maintained, usedeffectively and efficiently with risk assessments and appropriate training completed.

To ensure new or replacement equipment is not used by self or staff until it has beencommissioned in accordance with Livewell SW policy. Defective equipment is reported andmade safe without delay in accordance with Livewell SW procedures.

Responsible for ensuring, safe, appropriate and cost-effective/optimised use of educationalresources.

Responsibility for administration

To take a lead role in audit, research and interdisciplinary development within the service.

Maintain an accurate diary of visits/travel across the region and submit completed travel andspecial duty claim forms monthly.

To access and respond to work related emails and other information on a regular basisthrough Livewell Southwest intranet.

To support Patient Safety Incident Investigations, after action reviews, case reviews andincidents, providing feedback as required to staff, patients and relatives.

Create and maintain up-to-date records of work undertaken, action plans, spreadsheets, andany other administrative activities required for the role and provide reports on areas ofachievement and activities to senior managers / forums.

Develop effective working partnerships with key stakeholders.

Lead on the implementation and management of evaluation audits to measure the impact ofeducational programmes and disseminate the results.

Guide and lead the staff by using blended educational techniques, exercising judgement indelivering complex practical and theoretical teaching. This will require the analysis andinterpretation of a range of options.

Guide and support learners to identify opportunities for maintaining and improving standardsof patient care across all aspects of the patients journey.

Act as an effective role model by demonstrating specialist expertise in own practice andsupport others to identify and deliver best practice.

To undertake comprehensive risk assessments in relation to educational needs of allsituations associated with the care of patients to ensure own and others safety.

Be an autonomous practitioner, working within appropriate professional guidelines and codeof conduct.

To comply with local confidentiality policies and be able to respond effectively to anyconcerns of abuse/safeguarding and know procedures they need to follow to escalate theirconcerns.

Comply with all infection control policies and guidance and attend relevant updates to supportthe needs of the service.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own workincluding the management of individuals in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinicalcare for the individuals under your management and support the other staff within the teamto do likewise.

To deliver the highly specialist clinical needs required for the post, through establishedexperience/specialist postgraduate training.

To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent which must be documented and workwithin a legal framework with individuals who lack capacity to consent to treatment. To followall recognised policies and procedures in relation to child protection and vulnerable adultcases.

Responsibility for implementation of policy and/or service developments

To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance, Risk Management and applyto work situation.

Facilitate the development of service objectives within own area, considering relevantguidelines and the needs of the Organisations and national drivers.

Identify and undertake areas for research and evaluations within neurological rehabilitation,facilitating the involvement of appropriate staff.

Monitor the emergence of new evidence and implement and evaluate research-basedrecommendations that are expected to improve patient care.

Adhere to organisational and departmental policies to ensure the safe use of equipment byothers through teaching, training and supervision of practice.

To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and effective risk managementand its application to daily service delivery.

Ensure staff meet national professional and organisational standards of conduct andpractice.

Lead and promote continuous clinical service improvement within the MDT.

Work with other team leads, professional leads, practice leads and managers in theoperational planning and implementation of policy and service development to enhance thelearning environment.

Other Responsibilities

To undertake the measurement and evaluation of own work and current practices using.

Evidence Based Practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or withthe team managers. Make recommendations for change.

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of appropriate areas of professional practice, evidence based practice, research and professional developments and maintain a CPD portfolio.

Work with professional and practice leads to gain wider perspective on current professional practice issues and encourage professional development within the service by a variety ofmeans e.g. review groups, in-service training programmes, special interest groups with aimof sharing and expanding specialist knowledge and practice across the service.

Through negotiation with the Assistant Directorate Manager and service managers undertakeany other duties or projects which require specialist input, or professional development asconsidered appropriate.

Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner and organise own workload.

Additional Requirements

• The post holder will need to travel and attend to service users based across Plymouth and other geographical areas.

Experience

• Up to date clinical nursing skills and relevant experience
• Experience of co-ordinating and managing staff and patients
• Ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines
• Sound understanding of neuro conditions and complex management of this patient group
• Experience working with patients with tracheostomies, entral feeding devices and IVs
• Experience of teaching in the classroom/lecture theatre
