Job summary

To provide nursing care in the Operating Department and as a skilled member of the Theatre team.

To act as the scrubbed or circulating nurse during surgical procedures.

The staff nurse may carry out duties of Senior Nurse in her absence.

As a Registered Nurse has responsibilities involving the storage, checking of drugs.

Main duties of the job

Providing nursing care for patients within the Minor Operations Department.

Performing Minor Operation Department work in accordance with agreed policy, e.g.

  1. Participating as a Scrubbed member of the Theatre team and carrying out safety checks of swabs, instruments and needles, in conjunction with a second nurse and reporting on the same to the surgeon.
  2. Acting as a circulating member of the Theatre team.
  3. Assisting with other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of Theatres.
  4. Labelling and despatch of laboratory specimens
  5. Providing assistance to the Surgeon as required.
  6. Advising Senior Nurse or Line Manager of proposed changes in the order of the operating lists.

Responsibility for Human Resources/Supervision or Management of others

Participate in the supervision of junior staff.

Assist with the orientation of new staff.

Assist senior staff in the assessment of junior and new staff members.

Ensuring the maintenance of good relationships, communications and teamwork with all disciplines within the department and other departments of the hospital concerned with the Minor Operations Department work.

Participate in regular meetings of the Minor Operations Department staff.
