Do you have a keen interest in and passion for supporting families to feed their baby their way, supporting breastfeeding and infant nutrition?

Nottingham CityCare Partnership Childrens Public Health 0-19 Nursing Service are looking for Nutrition Peer Support Workers to work across Nottingham City.

We are looking for people, who have personal experience of breastfeeding, to join our teams of Health Visitors, School Nurses, Family Nurses and support staff working in a think family way, working together to support families to feed their baby their way while enjoying healthier lifestyles.

As part of the team, you will be supporting women and their families with their preferred baby feeding choices, promoting, and supporting breast feeding through telephone contacts, home visits and breastfeeding groups. You will support them on their journey from before the baby is born, in the first few days after the baby is born, through introducing first foods and balancing milk and meals so that by their first birthday the baby is moving towards having 3 healthy meals and snacks a day.

We serve a very diverse population, it would be beneficial if you speak another language.

The Childrens Public Health 0-19 Nursing Service teams deliver Public Health interventions as part of the A Better Start service across Nottingham City (formally known as Health Visiting and School Nursing Services).

Main duties of the job

You will work across Nottingham City as part of a geographically based skill mix team that delivers Childrens 0-19 Public Health Nursing Services supporting the delivery of nutrition focused interventions including diet and physical exercise health promotion and the Healthy Child Programme to children and families.

Your role will be to engage with pregnant and postnatal women, and their partners, in their homes, by telephone and in virtual/face to face clinics and groups in the community. You will support them to responsively feed their babies their way (breast milk or combination) and support with healthy lifestyle choices regarding diet, nutrition, and physical exercise.

Your focus is breastfeeding support encouraging and supporting healthy nutrition in the antenatal contact and first six weeks of the postnatal period with an emphasis on those who are less likely to initiate or maintain breastfeeding.

Your practice must adhere to clinical guidelines, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) both on a local and national level and you must demonstrate Nottingham CityCare Partnership CIC values and behaviours in all you do.

  • You will support the delivery of high-quality services to children and their families in Nottingham as part of the Giving Nottingham Children the Best Start In Life contract.
  • You are expected work in a cost-effective way ensuring responsible use of public funds.
  • You will undertake mandatory, and role specific training as required.
  • You will participate in management, safeguarding supervision and annual appraisal.
  • The core service hours are 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.

Key Responsibilities

Quality and performance

  • Undertake Healthy Child Programme infant and maternal nutrition and breastfeeding public health interventions delegated by the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN).
  • Provide nutrition peer support to pregnant and postnatal women, working within local, national and UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative guidance to support improved infant nutrition outcomes.
  • Advise on the appropriate use of Vitamin D for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and babies.

Promote Healthy Start

  • Coordinate and deliver the contact with new mother to offer breastfeeding support in the initial post-natal period, within commissioned timescales, over the telephone or face to face.
  • Plan, in partnership with the SCPHN/Public Health Nutrition Lead, facilitate and deliver breastfeeding and infant nutrition groups (First Foods, Healthy Lifestyles, Milk to Meals) and clinics.
  • Plan, in partnership with the SCPHN/Public Health Nutrition Lead, breastfeeding and healthy lifestyle nutrition health promotion initiatives in a variety of settings e.g. displays and health promotion focused events.
  • Undertake breast feeding assessments to support maternal confidence in successful breast feeding. Where concerns are identified escalate to SCPHN for additional assessment and intervention.
  • Contribute to the promotion and uptake of enhanced offers to children and families e.g. imagination library.
  • Support the team with clinical processes e.g., ensuring that rooms are set up for groups/clinics, that equipment is clean, that health promotion literature is available and health promotion displays are up to date.
  • To be flexible as required in supporting service delivery across the whole City.
  • Signpost clients to additional ratified support and resources e.g., Feed Your Way, Specialist Infant Feeding Clinic.
  • To maintain contemporaneous healthcare records using SystmOne in line with National and Nottingham CityCares policies and procedures.
