Job summary

To work as part of a team which provides care and treatment to individuals with mental ill health. To provide direct care according to the needs of the service users and within the care programme approach/care management framework.

To provide support, give time to an allocated group of service users and, therefore, promote recovery, assisting in maintaining the links with their community environment. To assist the Care Co-ordinator /key nurse in the planning, implementation and evaluation of individual care plans.

Main duties of the job

Be able to communicate effectively, be empathetic, compassionate and patient with service users.

Be non judgemental in approach and think and act calmly.

Maintain confidentiality; promote a therapeutic environment, which acknowledges diversity and cultural difference.

Demonstrate a good understanding of mental health issues.

Ensure that service users engage effectively with the agreed care plans and access appropriate activities provided on a regular and consistent basis.

Positively promote independent living of service users.

To be able to communicate routine information in an arena where there will be barriers to understanding, and to be able to use tact and persuasion in a non aggressive manner.

Develop a rapport based upon companionship and friendship, but within appropriate and transparent boundaries.

Provide regular and practical support to service users and their carers in developing and managing dignity and independence.

Provide support with daily living activities and be prepared to assist with practical tasks (feeding, bathing etc).

To maintain adequate records, as required by existing procedures, entering appropriate details in the service users case notes, as necessary.

Take into account the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, Infection Control, food hygiene regulations.

Attend and participate in agreed training, development and supervision sessions, as an individual and part of the team.
