Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinician to work within the Adult Community Eating Disorder Service as the FREED Champion. FREED (First Episode and Rapid Early Intervention Service for Young Adults with Eating Disorders) was introduced by South London and Maudsley Trust in 2016 and is now available across the country. The aim of the service is rapid engagement, assessment and progression to treatment for those identified as having an eating disorder history of less than 3 years aged 17.5 to 25 years. FREED aims to deliver evidence based, individualised treatments and prioritises engagement with families.

Main duties of the job

The FREED champion will be responsible for contacting every indivdual referred to the service within 48 hours. A triage assessment will take place at this point to gather information on how the eating difficulties affect the individual and how long clinical symptoms have been present. The FREED champion is then responsible for arranging a full assessment within 7 days of receving referral. In consultation with the wider Community Eating Disorder Service the FREED champion will arrange treatment to start within 4 weeks of receiving referral. This requires exellent assessment and communication skills.

The FREED champion is also responsbile for the promotion of the service and liasing with other teams and professionals throughout the region to ensure people are aware of the service and how to access this so young people can receive the help and support they require without delay.

JOB PURPOSE

The post holder will be based within the existing Community Eating Disorders Service for Adults. The primary focus is working with clients accessing treatment through the FREED pathway, though the post holder is part of the broader team. The post holder manages all referrals for this pathway and offers initial triage, as well as providing a clinical service to people experiencing an eating disorder.

In addition, the post holder is responsible for liaising and working with other professionals as appropriate, alongside the promotion and development in the service of the FREED approach.

You will lead with other senior colleagues the continuing development of a high-quality service that is underpinned by evidence-based practice and care pathways/packages and NICE guidance; leading on service development and policy in conjunction with the other senior clinicians, and Service Lead.

You will be expected to work collaboratively with key partner organisations, service users, carers, clinicians, and other practitioners within the multi-disciplinary team in delivery of services; working flexibly where appropriate and operationally required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Clinical Function

  • To manage all referrals accessing the service via the FREED pathway, including initial triage and subsequent allocation.

- Lead a regular FREED Huddle bringing together all clinicians involved in the FREED pathway.

  • Assess patients referred to the service and co-produce appropriate treatment plans.
  • Use appropriate evidence-based treatment such as MANTRA, CBT-E, SSCM etc.
  • Manage and oversee the care of service users with highly complex needs.
  • Produce accurate and timely documentation, conduct and manage the maintenance of accurate and timely documentation/records on all service users in line with NAVIGO policy.
  • Conduct, supervise and oversee risk assessments of all service users.
  • Provide professional clinical leadership to multi-disciplinary meetings ie referral/review/business, professional or safeguarding meetings.
  • Report and document incidents as required and act upon findings as appropriate.
  • Act as a care co-ordinator in highly complex cases.
  • Provide practical support, guidance and education for service users, carers and other professionals as required.
  • Be competent in use of relevant screening and assessment tools.
  • Lead and participate in formulation, delivery and review of individualised evidence-based care/care packages according to NICE guidance including non-medication strategies.

Core Non-Clinical Function

  • To continuously review the implementation of the FREED service model and care package, advising the Service Lead on its progress and identifying any areas for improvement or opportunities for further service development.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that required core outcome data are collated and reported back to the FREED network.
  • To proactively engage with the FREED project and join the ongoing FREED supervision groups.
  • Manage and co-ordinate multi-disciplinary meetings ie referral/review/business/handover.
  • In conjunction with the Service Lead, take a lead role in clinical service development and review.
  • Identify aspects of the service which need to be improved and implement appropriate changes in conjunction with the Service Lead.
  • Provide clinical leadership and professional expertise to the team.
  • Work closely with and assist the Service Lead with development and implementation and review of operational/clinical policies.
  • Deliver training where appropriate for other professionals.
  • Lead the Team in the evaluation and monitoring of the FREED service in conjunction with the Service Lead.
  • Ensure that the service through the implantation of performance management, all key performance indicators and targets identified by NAVIGO are met and adhere to local and government initiatives.
  • Hold responsibility for co-ordination and management of the FREED project in providing a safe, effective and therapeutic clinical service, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care packages.

Management Responsibility

You will be expected to support the work of the Service Lead in managing the performance of the service. This will include resource management, operational planning, clinical governance, and workforce planning.

You will be expected to support and plan new service initiatives taking a lead management role in these initiatives as requested by the Service Lead or operational service manager.
