Job summary

Our services provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management for children presenting with a range of conditions including complex neuro-disability, neurodevelopmental issues such as ADHD and autism and delayed development. We also provide services to support multi-agency decision making and medical input for children with identified safeguarding concerns, Children in Care and Adoption. You will work closely with our extensive multi-disciplinary teams including Specialist nurses, Therapists, Psychologists and Speciality and Specialist Doctors.

The successful applicant will develop their expertise and leadership in a clinical area to complement the existing team, to help develop this area of our work to meet current and future challenges.

Our service has an excellent reputation for training, with opportunities to support the development of doctors in training at all levels, including having GRID training posts for Community Child health and Neuro-disability. We have close links with the University of Bristol Medical School and you will have opportunities to train Medical students both in clinical settings, or through the wider educational opportunities the service provides.

Main duties of the job

A range of leadership roles are also needed, and can be flexibly applied to the post. Successful applicants are supported to develop an area of Special Interest dependent on the services requirements. You will also contribute to the broad community paediatric work of the department including close working with colleagues in the Local Authorities and at Bristol Childrens Hospital to contribute to safeguarding cases.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCPCH [postgraduate qualification]
  • Maintain full registration with the GMC
  • Must have CCT in paediatrics and subspecialty for Community Paediatrics or Neurodisability, or equivalent experience, and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment or be able to demonstrate that they expect the CCT to be awarded one within 6 months of the date of interview
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career
  • Recognition on specialist register in Community Paediatrics
  • Higher Academic Degree

Desirable

  • Demonstrated expertise in a specialist field of community paediatrics complementary to the interests of existing consultants
  • Completion of a general management/leadership training course or programme
  • Teaching qualification/training or advanced teaching experience

Experience

Essential

  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on disability, child protection and on wider aspects of community paediatric care. Understanding the needs of children and young people who are looked after and those with a care plan for adoption
  • Experience, expertise, and interest in the health needs of Looked after Children, if interested in a Designated Doctor for LAC role, together with experience or understanding of the strategic nature of the role together with knowledge of the multiagency context
  • Experience in multidisciplinary working/team working
  • Ability to organise self and work independently, as well as part of the Community Paediatric team more widely. To balance individual requirements against those of the wider Service and Organisation
  • Adequate training and/or experience, or willingness to undertake further in-post training, in order to take on a lead role in a specialist area as described in relevant post.
  • Fully competent in all aspects of General Paediatrics
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Experience in audit project and written up
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues. Knowledge of political context within which we operate
  • Proven teaching ability.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates
  • Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate and work well with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients
