Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join the Public Health Nursing Service in Bristol or North Somerset as an Infant Feeding Specialist.

Sirona's public health nursing services strive to provide the highest standard of Infant Feeding support for parents and infants through their commitment to the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative programme.

As an Infant Feeding Specialist you will use your skills and experience to support women who are experiencing challenges with feeding that have not been successfully resolved by the universal health visiting service or local skilled peer support groups.

It is recognised that additional specialist and individualised support for infant feeding contributes to the important goal of supporting all parents and infants to have an enjoyable and safe experience of feeding, promoting positive early relationships and both short and long term child health outcomes.

Infant Feeding Specialists will work as part of a skill mix within the Health Visiting Service and will be line managed by the Infant Feeding Lead in their locality.

The role requires a flexible approach to location, utilising different community facilities as potential clinic / group space and also home visiting.

The post-holder will have extensive experience of supporting breastfeeding in the community together with a calm, pragmatic and compassionate approach to supporting families.

There are multiple positions in Bristol and North Somerset and we would consider a mix of full & part time.

Main duties of the job

  • Supporting high quality service delivery and the continued accreditation of the Health Visiting service as UNICEF 'Baby Friendly'
  • Maintaining a robust understanding of evidence based practice in relation to infant feeding support including the social and emotional support needs of parents in the perinatal period.
  • Delivering an effective, flexible and responsive specialist breastfeeding support service for women experiencing complex and / or enduring breastfeeding difficulties.
  • Working collaboratively with the maternity services, the local authority and third sector and voluntary groups to ensure that women have access to high quality, timely and effective support for infant feeding.
  • Offering training and support to Health Visitors and Community Nursery Nurses around infant feeding to raise the quality of knowledge and practical skills across the service
