As a Healthcare Assistant you will play a key role in delivering high quality service in the community, administering people’s daily or twice daily insulin injections. You will be based in either Woking, Staines or Walton areas but will be expected to work across areas if needed.
No experience is required and full training will be provided for you.
We can offer shifts between 2 and 6 hours per day between 8am and 8pm to cover a 7-day service.
Here are some examples of the hours that we could consider:
- The late – 6pm till 8pm or 5pm-7pm (to include weekends).
- Part-time – 10 hours per week contracts, working 5 days a week (to include weekends and 8pm finishes).
- The school morning shift – 10:00am till 12:00pm (to include weekends and occasional 8pm finishes).
- Mornings – 8am till 12pm (to include weekends and occasional 8pm finishes).

Clinical and Technical:
- Monitors and maintains the health, safety
and security of self and patients during clinical procedures.
- The post
holder will be undertaking blood glucose monitoring, administration of insulin
and be able to identify a deteriorating patient.
- The post
holder will be assessed on their practical skills and knowledge base (training
will be provided) and must have reached competency levels prior to working
unsupervised.

- Performs the correct
procedure for blood glucose monitoring as per CSH Surrey procedure using the
designated CSH Surrey agreed medical device.
- Ability to undertake Administration of Insulin competencies successfully.
- Ability to undertake blood glucose monitoring competencies successfully.
- Demonstrates
knowledge of what constitutes stable and unstable blood glucose levels for each
patient based upon individually set blood glucose targets.
- Be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia and
hyperglycaemia and give the correct treatment when needed.
- Ability to understand and follow
care plans.
- Ability
to confirm the insulin type, dosage, time, patient identification against
a prescription chart.
- Ability to
administer insulin by using correct injection technique and safe medicines
management principles.
- Identify and
have knowledge of local policies regarding administration of insulin.
- Ability to record administration in nursing
records along with any concerns / changes and report accordingly.
- Be able to identify a deteriorating patient and
act on this accordingly including escalation through the established routes.
- Ability to successfully complete and carry out
competencies required to identify and monitor a deteriorating patient.
- Ensure equipment is checked and is
fit for purpose.
- Identify and have knowledge of local policies
regarding administration of insulin.
- Performs telephone duties that include making
and receiving calls from and to the Insulin Administration Team, conveying
sensitive information to other healthcare professionals, patients and their
representatives.
- Participates in a personal development programme and
works towards identified development needs. To include attendance on
mandatory training courses and subsequent updates in line with CSH policy.
- Communicates effectively with other
staff groups both internal and external. To include healthcare
professionals, patients and their representatives.
- Provides and receives sensitive
information from patients and their representatives where empathic skills
are required. Includes communication with difficult patients who may have
barriers to understanding and is able to present information accordingly.
- Ensures appropriate stock levels
are maintained in own area of operation, this may include ordering stock.
- Maintains a clean and safe working
environment through good housekeeping practices. This will include
disposal of clinical waste and decontamination processes.
- Is aware of Clinical Governance,
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and
Safety policies, reporting problems, errors or breaches to the senior
staff.
- Resuscitation trained with ability to use
CPR techniques.
