Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and innovative Occupational Therapist with an interest in supporting young people with learning disabilities and complex needs.

Working closely with the education and pastoral teams you will enable students to make continued progress in their education programmes.

You will be able to demonstrate sound clinical assessment skills and be responsible for providing professional guidance and written reports.

You will have knowledge of sensory processing and ideally hold a post-graduate Sensory Integration qualification.

With excellent communication skills, you will be confident managing your own clinical caseload and leading and directing an OT assistant. You will also benefit from working as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team and in collaboration with therapy teams in other Livability Education settings.

Main duties of the job

Based at Nash College, the Occupational Therapist will oversee the OT provision for students with complex medical needs, often with associated difficulties such as autism. You will be clinically responsible for Occupational Therapy input for some students in terms of functional life skills and sensory processing to reduce barriers to learning and embed therapeutic strategies into the colleges curriculum.

Job responsibilities

Main duties and responsibilities

Work collaboratively with the senior management at Nash College, participating in and contributing to the therapy provision for students

Taking into consideration the curriculum assessment process and the latest approaches adopted by the college, support implementation of therapy approaches within the colleges curriculum including the implementation of programmes prescribed by the Occupational Therapy team

In collaboration with the College Management Team, contribute to the development and delivery of the college development plan as pertains to the provision of occupational therapy services

Implement and develop a regular service review for the OT provision, in addition to monitoring the annual review process to ensure students EHCPs reflect their current needs

Analyse and report on students progression and achievement of Occupational Therapy related targets via outcome measures

Provide day to day supervision for the Occupational Therapy Assistant, ensuring that appropriate levels of support occurs as per HCPC professional guidelines

Oversee maintenance of the Occupational Therapy equipment inventory and be responsible for monitoring stock levels in the therapy department, requesting new equipment as appropriate

Oversee appropriate training of all college staff in areas related to Occupational Therapy provision and ensure this training occurs on a regular basis

Manage and oversee clinical practice of external Occupational Therapy-related contractors such as Locums, consultants.

Advise on the Occupational Therapy provision necessary to meet the needs of potential new students

Maintain an up-to date, advanced level of highly-developed specialist theoretical knowledge and therapeutic evidence-based practice, participating in relevant training, attend mandatory training days/courses and relevant Clinical Excellence Network groups

Continuously develop knowledge and expertise related to applied behaviour analysis, autism and associated disabilities

Access regular professional supervision to develop skills in reflective practice and access professional support re clinical governance and professional issues as they arise

Promote and ensure the good reputation of the Nash College and its individual divisions

Undertake any other tasks which can be reasonably expected in relation to the role

Clinical work

The Occupational Therapist will maintain a direct clinical caseload and will be responsible for completing the following tasks relating to that caseload:

Assessing, planning and implementing appropriate Occupational Therapy interventions for students, individually or in small groups, with a wide range of needs.

Integrating therapy targets into the classrooms including implementing and overseeing lecturers running Occupational Therapy programmes

Assessing and evaluating OT outcomes and reporting findings

Writing reports to contribute to the Annual Review and attend meetings as required

Demonstrating clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures

Maintain up-to-date and accurate case notes in line with professional standards and college policies

Adhere to local and national standards and guidelines relating to professional practice (RCOT) and maintain registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

  • Recognised therapy degree/qualification
  • HCPC Licence to Practice
  • Registration in relevant therapy body (RCOT)
  • Evidence of CPD e.g. evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses/membership of relevant special interest groups
  • Proven, sound experience as qualified clinician
  • Experience working at band 6/7 level within a relevant specialist setting
  • Proven experience of working with young people diagnosed with autism
  • Experience of line managing other professionals and providing supervision for other professionals
  • Well established knowledge of a range of approaches to assessment, intervention and outcomes relevant to service user group
  • Knowledge of standards of record keeping and confidentiality
  • Knowledge/Interest in behaviour analysis and how it applies in a therapy setting would be a significant advantage
  • Do you have experience in leading a team of teachers or lecturers and supporting them on areas of curriculum?
