Job summary

Aphasia Support (AS) are looking to recruit a Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) to oversee our pathway of support across Yorkshire. We anticipate this role will be mainly home based with occasional visits to the office and client homes. This role is offered for 1-2 days per week.

This role is central to the charity's operational activities. The post holder will work alongside the charity's network of Consultant SLTs and in house SLT Assistant. They will be the main point of contact for NHS referral partners ensuring that people with aphasia are progressed appropriately along the pathway. They will support volunteers with training and advice.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting time to join Aphasia Support who are commencing their plans to expand beyond their current working area of Yorkshire.

We are looking for someone who is driven, innovative and passionate about supporting people with aphasia and passionate about supporting our volunteers, many of whom are the speech and language therapists of the future. We are looking for someone who has strong knowledge of life after stroke services and who has a vision for how AS can develop its services over the coming years.

The role is offered on a fixed term basis until July 31st 2025. The charity hopes to be able to secure funding for this role to continue beyond this date.

Aphasia Support is a forward thinking Yorkshire based charity whose mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with aphasia and their carers, by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long term support. We want to create a world where every person with aphasia has access to support.

Job responsibilities

Be the main point of contact for NHS referral partners and other organisations into the charitys support offering.

Provide support and mentoring for AS volunteers and SLT Assistant, including supported appointments with people with aphasia, if required.

Complete reviews of client progress at specific points along their support journey.

Deliver training to volunteers and carers, as required as part of the induction programme and volunteer competency scheme.

Complete initial assessments in clients homes, as required.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Hold a recognised speech and language therapy degree accredited by RCSLT
  • HPC Registered to practice as a SLT
  • Registered member of RCSLT

Experience

Essential

  • An extensive portfolio and evidence of advanced personal and advanced/highly specialist professional development with skills, experience and achieved outcomes
  • Substantial experience as an SLT supporting people with communication difficulties such as aphasia and apraxia of speech
  • Ability to perform specialised SLT assessments which will form the basis for support plans
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the national stroke service model, and in particular life after stroke services
  • Strong knowledge of computer therapy apps to support communication goals, including AAC for people with aphasia and apraxia of speech
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of supported conversation techniques

Desirable

  • Strong evidence of participation in service development initiatives

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
  • Sensitive to the needs of others and has an awareness of responsiveness to other peoples feelings and needs
