Job summary

Are you passionate about delivering high quality patient centred care in a well-equipped and established Day Surgery Unit. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Surgical First Assistant to join our committed team on the Bank. The hospital comprises of a well-equipped theatre & purpose-built procedure room, outpatients department, minor injury and illness unit and x-ray. You will be working with a compassionate Day Surgery team committed to delivering the best in care and rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. As we continue to expand the services we offer, we are seeking a Bank Surgical First Assistant.

About the Trust

Tetbury Hospital is an independent healthcare provider in the heart of the Cotswolds providing an established day surgery service to patients who choose to have their NHS surgery at Tetbury. The hospital is highly regarded by our visiting consulting body who provide a wide range of specialities including ophthalmic, general and gynaecological surgery. The primary focus of the hospital is the NHS services we provide across our outpatients, day surgery and minor injury and illness unit. In addition to our NHS funded services, we offer private health care to insured or self-pay patients. Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced Operating Department Practitioner who is HCPC Registered.

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

Job description

Job responsibilities

Provide competent and skilled assistance in all aspects of surgery under the supervision of the surgeon.

Undertaking duties such as (not exhaustive)

Skin preparation and draping.

Handling of instruments and cameras (laparoscopic work)

Catheterisation.

Use of suction as guided by the surgeon.

Use of specialised surgical equipment.

Provide assistance to the surgeon or anaesthetist as required.

Understand advanced surgical techniques and make professional and clinical deicisons for which the First Surgical Assistant is accountable.

Have advanced knowledge of current elective and emergency surgical techniques and equipment required to achieve the optimal outcomes in surgery.

Ensure detailed understanding of the principles of surgical techniques required.

Responsibility for Patient Care

Using professional judgement, the post-holder will be able to analyse a range of patient conditions and act appropriately in the peri-operative setting.

Maintain high standards of patient care by personal example and professional conduct.

Implement safety measures in accordance with agreed procedures in relation to:

Checking of patients in the Day Surgery Unit.

Checking of swabs, instruments, and needle counts.

Ionising radiation.

Static electricity explosion hazards.

Comply with Trust-wide policies in place in relation to safe custody, handling, and administration of medications and reporting any discrepancies to the Day Surgery Managers or Matron.

Be able to critically evaluate appropriate evidence and research to ensure that patients benefit from the delivery of high-quality service.
