The role involves providing care and support to people of all ages including children with Tuberculosis (TB), their families and friends, as well as others who may have been in contact with TB or from a country with a high prevalence of TB.

We aim to limit the spread of tuberculosis within the community and reduce the transmission of infection by early diagnosis and effective treatment.

Main duties of the job

Locala work alongside both acute trusts in Kirklees (MYHT/CHFT) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to provide holistic care to patients and their families who have TB. We also work closely with other TB services across the country to identify TB cases.

This position will predominantly cover South Kirklees however the post holder may be required to also work in North Kirklees.

The TB service offers:

  • Support, advice and carry out home visits to those suffering from both active and latent tuberculosis
  • Screening to all new entrants into the area who come from countries with a high prevalence of TB. Support and advice to families, carers and close contacts of people with active and latent tuberculosis, identified by our screening process.
  • Screening to contacts of patients with active TB. We screen anyone who may have been exposed to TB who is at an increased risk of developing Tuberculosis.
  • The BCG vaccine of selected young people and children under 16 years of age, according to national and local policy
  • Reactive outbreak screening in partnership with UKHSA, NHS and the local Integrated care systems (ICSs). We offer educational sessions around TB in a variety of community and clinical settings.

We work very hard to break the stigma of TB through education, and we understand that people can often feel embarrassed and extremely worried when they are told they have TB. However, TB is completely preventable and treatable.
