Job responsibilities
Clinical
(under the direct supervision of the shift supervisor)
Immediate
response to emergency calls.
Provide
immediate health input to the initial assessment of the scene to meet the needs
of the patient, including casualty confirmation, triage and acute medical
management.
Assessment
and diagnosis of patients conditions in order to provide effective use of
equipment and medications supplied to offer treatment appropriate to the
patients needs.
Participation
as part of a crew in the provision of care, assistance and support as
appropriate to patients with illness, injury, impaired mobility or any other
physical or mental handicap.
To
provide the highest standards of clinical care whilst operating in a range of
clinical environments in line with MAAC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
and guidelines.
To
undertake thorough patient assessment and develop management plans,
implementing care to patients in accordance with MAAC Policies, SOPs and
guidelines, using the best evidence- based practice and, where appropriate, in
collaboration with other healthcare professionals within the multi-disciplinary
team.
To
work within the scope of practice agreed by MAAC Policies, SOPs, guidelines and
governance requirements when working within the operational team.
To
competently undertake other additional clinical skills in accordance with
MAACs SOPs, guidelines and governance arrangements.
Undertake
manual handling of equipment and patients, having appropriately risk assessed
each occasion, using appropriate moving and handling techniques and equipment
where provided.
To
administer the appropriate medications, fluids and blood products in accordance
with SOPs and guidelines.
To
interpret and utilise data obtained from the effective use of invasive and
non-invasive monitoring equipment.
To
have a thorough working knowledge and understanding of the equipment used by MAAC
in the delivery of patient care.
Within
the multidisciplinary team, select the appropriate destination hospital,
considering the patients needs based on clinical assessment, diagnosis and
regional care networks.
To
maintain a safe and clean environment for patients and staff, initiating
appropriate actions to achieve this, following MAACs infection prevention and
control policy.
To
undertake the effective completion of patient care records in accordance with
MAAC SOPs and to demonstrate awareness of information governance policies.
To
undertake appropriate record keeping in line with key organisational
requirements.
Operate
in difficult, hazardous and remote conditions ensuring appropriate equipment is
available at all incidents.
Provide
clinical hand-over to receiving team using the ATMIST system at the relevant
Emergency Department, ensuring as far as practicable the safety, comfort and
well-being of patients, acting in a courteous and sympathetic manner.
To
undertake and document all Continuing Professional Development in line with
regulatory standards and provide a summary of such activity as required to
support the MAAC yearly clinical review process.
Communication
(under the direct supervision of the shift supervisor)
To
communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
Communicate
effectively with patients and their relatives in a calm and compassionate
manner, where appropriate allowing them to make informed choice about their
healthcare needs.
Able
to present complex information to a range of audiences in a manner they
understand.
A
commitment to participate in public relations activities on behalf of the
charity. These will include representing the charity at such functions as
cheque presentations, undertaking speaking engagements and delivery of
presentations to large groups of people, aircraft tours and assisting the
charity in fund raising and public awareness.
To
undertake effective and appropriate radio and telephone communications
utilising a range of technologies.
Liaise
with the communications team when required ensuring that the use of personal information
conforms to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and Caldicott
guidelines.
Maintain
communication with appropriate ambulance emergency operations centre at all
times.
Provide
constructive feedback to crews in relation to medical and trauma cases to
promote best practice, including frequent debriefing with clinical members of
staff and the public as appropriate.
The
handing over of patients to appropriate staff on arrival at the receiving
hospital, ensuring as far as practicable the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of
patients, acting in a courteous and sympathetic manner.
The
accurate maintenance of all records as required by MAAC, being mindful of and
abiding by GDPR regulations.
Timely
production of statements as requested from MAAC, the police, the coroner as
required. This will include Safeguarding statements.
Ensure
conduct is always of the highest standards and act as an ambassador for the
Charity and the medical profession.
Always
maintain the confidentiality of patient interactions.
Aviation
(under the direct supervision of the shift supervisor)
To
actively participate in effective Crew Resource Management in order to minimise
human error.
To
operate safely in an aviation environment and in accordance with the designated
Air Operator and as directed by the Pilot.
Participation
in pre-shift briefing including information gathering prior to the brief as
directed by the pilot.
Assist
with aircraft start up checks by external safety observation.
Operate
radios whilst in flight to communicate with regional Air desk.
Participate
in general safety observations as part of the crew in flight.
Communicate
clearly and effectively with all aircraft occupants in flight.
General
care of the aircraft including cleaning, tidiness, restock and readiness.
Operational
(under the direction of the shift supervisor)
Thorough
checking of aircraft/Critical Care Car/Rapid Response Vehicle equipment (CCC)
(including PPE) and restocking drugs/kit as necessary by MAAC SOPs.
Ensure
that drugs and Controlled Drugs are stored, booked out and any usage recorded
correctly.
Participate
in airbase daily tasks undertaking completion of checks on consumables and
stores to ensure sufficiency to maintain stock levels.
Provide
an operational response as part of a Critical Care Team during aircraft
downtime
To
work as an integral part of the Critical Care Team, delivering critical care
treatment in a variety of situations.
Participate
in trials of new equipment and procedures as advised by the MAAC Clinical
Committee / MAAC Medical Director.
Presentation
of a smart appearance incorporating current regulations relating to the wearing
of uniforms and personal protective equipment in line with current MAAC policy
and aircraft operators operations manual (HEMS or Air Ambulance).
Undertake
any other reasonable task as requested by the Clinical Operations Management
Team in relation to the smooth running of the service.
Carry
out risk assessments when required to ensure safe systems of work.
Participation
in the organisation and provision of selection, training and mentoring of new
staff for all platforms.
Personal
and Service Development
Show
commitment to continuing professional development both personally and for MAAC.
Maintain
General Medical Council Registration (GMC), and appropriate Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) including Appraisal and Revalidation as required
by the GMC.
Maintain
a logbook of whole of practice pre-hospital work for clinical governance
purposes.
Undertake
statutory and mandatory training as defined by MAAC in a timely manner
Maintain
necessary fitness levels for HEMS missions
Undertake
the necessary training, skills refreshers and education as required by the
Charity.
Full
engagement in daily and monthly clinical governance activities.
Attend,
contribute and present at MAAC Clinical Governance Days, forums and training
days.
Undertake
audit and research and implement improvements.
Participation
and acceptance of a regular peer review and audit of all significant cases
attended, led by MAAC Medical Director and appointed others.
Participation
in an annual review process, including observational shifts, to aid with
personal development and support the doctors wider yearly trust appraisal
process.
Mentor,
train and support the development of trainee critical care paramedics and PHEM
trainees.
Support
the development of any clinician who is granted observation on any MAAC
platform.
Regular
involvement and participation in any and all clinical trials and audit that
Midlands Air Ambulance have signed up to.
To
promote the role of the Charity.
Participate
in the organisation and provision of selection and training of new staff, both
doctors and CCPs.
Leadership
and Team Working (under the direction of the shift supervisor)
Demonstrate
personal accountability in everyday practice and understand responsibility for
staff to which actions may be delegated.
Demonstrate
effective team working with all members of the team, other healthcare
professionals and emergency service personnel.
