This role will provide a range of clinical and operational experience for those who may wish to consider PHEM as a future career via our fellowship post or the National PHEM training programme. It will also allow more experienced PHEM clinicians to explore our service in anticipation of more substantive post opportunities.

As part of a MAAC critical care team you will help provide Pre-Hospital Emergency Critical Care at the scene of the incident or accident, providing tertiary-level emergency care to those patients with the greatest need whilst facilitating their rapid transport by air or land to the most appropriate receiving hospital. You may also be required to assist at the scene of a significant/major incident in support of regional ambulance trusts.

This will be an unpaid, honorary post within MAAC. Successful candidates will be recognised for aviation purposes as Medical Passengers.

The duration of the honorary contract will be 12 months in the first instance. This may be extended by mutual agreement.

You will be able to apply to undertake as many additional shifts as they wish providing the service has the training capacity.

After the initial 6 orientation shifts, you may start working towards a limited enhanced care portfolio of skills and interventions. This portfolio can be used towards formal MAAC PHEM solo sign off if they subsequently secure a substantive post with the service.

As a doctor on a honorary contract you will have access to all training activities within the service including surgical skills, learning and development and simulation days.

You will have a named mentor and their progress within the pool will be reviewed on a 3 monthly basis.

You will be supervised on operational shifts by an established PHEM doctor at all times. You may work within your own scope of practice providing this is under the supervision and agreement of your shift supervisor.

It is essential that you have sufficient personal indemnity for this role.

About us

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has been established for over 30 years and is one of the largest air ambulance charities, operating three aircraft during daylight hours and recently trialling two, night operations cars from its bases near Strensham services in Worcester and near RAF Cosford in Shropshire.

Two of the daytime aircraft are Doctor-CCP operated whilst the third aircraft operates as a dual CCP platform. The trialled night service has started as dual CCP platform but as fundraising allows, we are third manning with a Doctor at both bases.

The trial of a night service, with the aspiration to operate a doctor-CCP model on both night platforms, as well as the two daytime aircraft, means that MAAC is looking to expand its doctor cohort in the first instance with the introduction of PHEM Fellows.
