Job summary
Norton Medical Centre is seeking a skilled Healthcare Assistant to join our dedicated and supportive Primary Care team. The post holder will be involved in progressing the HCA team alongside the Nursing Team, utilising technology such as AccuRx and Ardens, and looking at innovative new ways to deliver care for our patients. If you are passionate and like to think outside the box then this is the role for you!
As a Practice that is keen on development and innovation, we understand the importance of continued learning and support, and as part of this we often get involved in research and pilot schemes. For example, we are currently running a wound care pilot, which the HCAs are an integral part of.
Our ideal candidate will have previous experience in Primary Care. Desirable skills include training in the delivery of NHS Healthchecks, annual care reviews, wound care, administration of influenza, pneumonia, shingles and B12 injections, knowledge of ear care, INR Star and proficiency in the use of IT. SystmOne clinical system knowledge is an advantage but not essential as training will be given.

Main duties of the job
HCAs compliment the role of the clinical support team and will provide general healthcare for patients within the competencies of the post holder. Duties may include:
- Providing screening and monitoring services for the patient population.
- Providing Treatment Room services.
- Assisting in the development of the role of HCA at Norton Medical Centre
- Working in compliance with practice protocols, with GP input and direction where appropriate, for screening and monitoring services
We deliver services from the Practice and in the community, therefore a full driving license and access to a vehicle is essential.

We are a supportive, busy GP Practice who cares for around 17,200 patients. The team consists of 7 Partners, 1 Retainer GP, 1 Salaried GP, 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 1 Trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 1 Nurse Practitioner, 1 Clinical Pharmacist, 4 Practice Nurses and 2 Healthcare Assistants, as well as supportive administrative teams.

Practice Development and Clinical Governance
- Participate in staff and primary healthcare team meetings.
- Provide information for significant event analysis meeting where appropriate.
- Contribute to service reviews of current services.
- Be aware of practice policies on risk management and Health & Safety.
- Be committed to contributing professional development in terms of education and training including preparation of a personal development plan for review at annual appraisal.
- Play an active role in the clinical governance agenda and participate in the induction and clinical supervision of Healthcare Assistants.
Partnership Issues
- Work within the close relationships of the practice team, providing support and liaising with other practice staff.
- Contribute to the development and effectiveness of multi-professional work teams.
Patient and Community Services
- Provide screening and monitoring services for the patient population.
- Provide treatment room services.

- Work in compliance with practice protocols for both manual and computer systems.

- annual and interim monitoring reviews for long term conditions and elderly care, usually in the practice, but in the patient's home where necessary.
- BP monitoring clinic with the support of the patient's usual GP
- preparing patients for ambulatory BP monitoring
- CVD risk assessments
- lung health checks for smokers
- influenza and pneumococcal immunisations under patient specific directives
- B12 injections under patient specific directives
- phlebotomy services as necessary (supplementary to phlebotomy clinic)
- second and subsequent dressings
- performing ECG testing
- performing spirometry testing
- administering quality assurance procedures e.g. refrigerator monitoring
- nursing supplies stock control
- completing new patient checks
- providing brief interventions for alcohol
- general health promotion support, including weight reduction monitoring, smoking cessation monitoring and support, etc.
- assisting with contraceptive implant clinics
- understanding and applying the principles of Infection Control
- performing Coagucheck and inputting into INR star for Warfarin patients
- Any other reasonable duties requested by the GPs or Practice Manager
Finance
- Process paperwork and data as required to maximise practice income.
Human Resources
- Attend, participate in, and contribute to staff meetings.
- Maintain accurate records in line with the practice policy and NMC guidelines.
- Support the appraisal process including the identification of own training needs.
- Take responsibility for own time keeping, sickness, and other absences in accordance with Practice policy.
Premises and Equipment
- Maintain an adequate stocks support system for the treatment room.
- Monitor equipment and report operating problems.
- Promote, monitor, and maintain health and safety, and security, in the workplace.
- Contribute as requested to the operational elements of equipment and premises upgrades or moves.
Information Governance and IT Management
- Comply with all Information Governance policies.
- Comply with all IT usage policies.
- Comply with all standardised data entry protocols.
- Comply with all systems for data security and protection.
