Job summary

Butterwick Hospice Care is the largest independent Hospice serving the areas of the Tees Valley, County Durham, North Yorkshire, and Wearside. We are a registered Charity which exists to freely provide in-patient and day services to adults and children suffering from life limiting illnesses. We also provide supportive services to patients’ families and loved ones. We rely on the donations and fundraising of people and businesses across the communities we serve to fund our services.

We are currently restructuring our Children’s services and an opportunity has arisen for a number of full and part time roles to join the team providing excellent care within our Children’s hospice, which is a 6-bedded in-patient unit providing planned respite, emergency, and end-of-life care.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of a highly capable, motivated and talented team of Nurses and HCT’s to deliver a broad range of nursing and care services.

You will be someone with the ability to maintain professional standards and excellent clinical care alongside the nursing staff. You will understand and appreciate children’s, young adults, carers’ and family needs. You will be enthusiastic and extremely committed to the Hospice service.

Good communication skills, a high level of self-discipline and self-motivation is a must. Flexibility is required to allow for a full range of shift cover – days, nights, and weekends. It is essential that you are able to deal with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

You will have energy and enthusiasm, commitment, good communication skills, and the ability to successfully deal with the daily challenges of complex and palliative care. In addition, you will need to:

· Have at least 6 months experience working in care, preferably with children.

· Be able to provide individual care to a child/young person, such as personal care or specified tasks.

· Be able to contribute to the high clinical standards and quality of care within a team framework, promoting good health practices, and continuity of care wherever possible.

Job description

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of this post is to: assist with the organisation and delivery of care for children/young people who have life limiting or life-threatening illnesses; collaboration with the multidisciplinary team; to provide support for carers and families; and to contribute to providing a “home from home” environment within the unit.

A healthcare technician’s role is to support and assist registered nurses to provide holistic and individualised care to meet the needs of patients.

Healthcare technicians will be developed to complete clinical tasks for patients who attend the unit. This will enable them to provide care to patients with or without the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

§ To work both on your own and with your colleagues to deliver a high standard of care.

§ Recognising and acknowledging your limitations and seeking appropriate support and guidance.

§ To provide individual care to a child/young person, such as personal care or specified tasks e.g., medication administration, gastrostomy feeds, as directed in the child’s individual care plan. Full training will be given, and tasks delivered when confident and competent.

§ To undertake training in moving and handling and use of hoists and other manual handling equipment to enable appropriate measures to be used to ensure the child/young person’s comfort and safety.

§ To contribute positively to creating and sustaining a caring environment, friendly and welcoming in an informal nature and mitigating institutional practices.

§ To contribute to the high clinical standards and quality of care within a team framework, promoting good health practices and continuity of care wherever possible.

§ To effectively communicate with others about a specific child/young person’s condition, including both verbal and written reports and documentation.

§ To follow current guidelines on safeguarding and understand the procedure to follow to report concerns to ensure the safety of the child is paramount.

§ To understand infection control principles and adapt practice accordingly under the guidance of the supervising health care professional.

§ To ensure that guidelines and policies are followed, e.g., health and safety, equality and diversity.

§ To be aware of the need for patient confidentiality – and to ensure that it is maintained.

§ To undertake training necessary for the role, meet the competencies required, and update skills appropriately.

§ To pro-actively participate in personal and team development.

§ Contribute, where possible, to the development and delivery of high quality, family-centred care to provide a holistic service.

§ To assist with recreational activities and play programmes according to the developmental needs and under the direction of the Play/Activity Team, an RSCN or family member.

§ To actively participate in outings and play work with the children/young people.

§ To undertake any necessary housekeeping to maintain the home from home environment.
