Job summary

We are looking to expand the catering operation at our new Hospice site in Thurrock so that we not only meet patient, staff and volunteer needs, but also develop a commercial project to generate income for the Hospice.

We are seeking an enthusiastic catering manager with experience of managing staff within a catering environment (ideally in health care), including the preparation of meals for patients with complex needs. Candidates able to offer experience in driving forward a commercial project to generate additional income are particularly welcome.

The successful applicant will have oversight of the catering operation supported by a hands on approach with the team to co-ordinate the planning, cooking and provision of food to a high standard.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the efficient operation of the catering function at St Luke’s Hospice Thurrock, ensuring the highest level of service to patients, visitors staff and the public. Responsible for the provision of patient meals to ensure patient nutritional needs are met and appropriate to patient needs, liaising with care staff as necessary, taking into account dietary and allergy needs. Acting as a pro-active manager with a hands on approach to drive the catering service at Thurrock forward. Co-ordinating the preparation and serving of food. Make recommendations to the Head of Corporate Services to enhance the profitability of the service and generate income for the Hospice. Carry out market research to ensure that the offering is correct for our patients, staff, visitors and the general public. Develop innovative meal planning including special theme day, and food service delivery, ensuring the highest standard of food presentation and quality to enhance the catering offer.

Job description

Job responsibilities

2.1 To be responsible for the operation of the new catering service at St Luke’s Hospice Thurrock.

2.2 Creating an exciting and strong catering offer, which provides a high level catering facility for patients, families, staff and the public, as well as contributing to hospice income generation.

2.3 Alongside the supply of meals to patients and their families, the post holder will work to increase income to the charity via the catering function.

2.5 The post holder will support the development of the catering staff, leading by example.

3. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1 The post holder must acquire and maintain an up to date working knowledge of all Hospice Strategies, Policies & Procedures.

3.2 The post holder will ensure Health & Safety regulations are adhered to.

3.3 The post holder will assist in ensuring the economical use and ordering of materials and equipment,

maintaining an awareness of the need for good housekeeping and helping to ensure unit

expenditure is within budgetary limits.

3.4 The post holder will maintain strict confidentiality within the Hospice and ensure that all staff and

volunteers under their management adhere to the Hospice Confidentiality Policy.

3.5 The post holder will be aware of and show a willingness to participate in other activities as may occur from time to time in order to promote the Hospice within the community.

3.6 The post holder will, once inducted, be expected to take on a special interest or Link responsibility, in which they will be expected to act as an information resource to the rest of the

team, and provide evidence based practice in that area.

3.7 The post holder will undertake any other duties which are considered to be consistent and relevant to the post.

3.8 The post holder will be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of their work, including the management of patients in their care.

3.9 The post holder will liaise with other services to ensure continuity of care, and to improve palliative care for patients in the community.
