Job summary

Sue Ryder has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical Services Manager to join our dedicated Bereavement team.

The role will oversee effective delivery of the online bereavement counselling service as the lead clinician, ensuring the service is high quality, safe and confidential for service users.

The Sue Ryder bereavement service offers interventions across the stepped care model including level 3 (NICE guidance 2004) time-limited one-to-one therapeutic online counselling, which addresses bereavement needs. It includes assessment using clinical tools including the Adult Attitude to Grief scale.

Our Online Bereavement Counselling Service, which offers free video sessions delivered by professional counsellors to any adults grieving in the UK, has been there for more people. In 202324:

We completed 53% more assessments and 34% more counselling sessions.

Overall, we delivered more than 6,300 hours of counselling and more than 1,700 hours of assessments.

There was a 44% rise in the number of people registering for our service compared to the previous year more than 4,500 during the year.

We had more than 220,000 visitors to our online Bereavement community and delivered 6300 hours of online Bereavement counselling with more than 1,700 hours of assessments. Our support pages have been viewed 220,00 times!

Main duties of the job

  • To manage the day-to-day running of the online bereavement counselling and palliative care counselling services using a time-limited 6-session model, working closely with the Head of Bereavement and Grief Services
  • To assess and manage risk for clients following the safeguarding process and escalate concerns to the Safeguarding team when required
  • To investigate and respond to clients comments, complaints, critical incidents and near misses. Prepare reports as required and implement learnings
  • To attend regular online line manager 1:1s and supervision and to run triage meetings
  • To support the Marketing and Communications team with awareness-raising activity, and liaising when required with the digital services team for service improvements and updates
  • To demonstrate a high level of understanding and monitor the quality of clinical governance guidelines and professional ethical standards through clinical audit
  • Work with Clinical Operations Manager and Head of Bereavement and Grief Services on compliance with Sue Ryder Healthcare key performance indicators for the service.
  • Support the Head of Bereavement and Grief Services in overseeing the clinical governance of the service, ensuring all confidentiality and safeguarding processes are being adhered to.
  • Work with the Head of Bereavement and Grief Services and Clinical Operations Manager to review and update processes

Essential

  • Significant clinical experience and/or training in complex client issues and risk.
  • Significant, demonstrable knowledge and/or training in working with bereavement, loss and grief.
  • Significant experience in leading, managing and holding clinical responsibility for large counselling services and teams.
  • Experience in providing psychological counselling via online delivery.
  • Experience of service management and leadership.
  • High level understanding of legal, ethical and data aspects pertinent to providing an online counselling service.

  • Online counselling qualification (minimum of 80 hours study), evidence of significant continued professional development in this area and a willingness to undertake formal and continuous training
  • Additional training in short-term counselling models
  • Qualification or significant experience in management, business coaching and mentoring
