Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health & Safety Officer to join our Estates Team. In your role as the Health & Safety Officer will be to provide support on an operational basis to the health & safety function.

Main duties of the job

The role of Health & Safety Officer is to provide support on an operational basis to the health & safety function.

You will be working as part of a small team, supporting the whole organisation with particular emphasis on:

o Promoting health and safety

o Providing health and safety information and advice

o Delivering health and safety training

o Risk assessments and safe operating procedures

o Operational and administrative support.

o A high level of visibility across the organisation.

The Childrens Trust is the UKs leading charity for children with acquired brain injury, providing expert rehabilitation, education, therapy, and care at our national specialist centre in Tadworth, and to children and their families across the UK, via our Brain Injury Community Service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Health and Safety Management

o Promote good stakeholder involvement and good safety culture

o Prepare and issue monthly health and safety briefing documents / toolbox talks

o Keep health and safety information up to date, including all fire safety documentation (fire emergency plans, fire safety manuals etc.), the health and safety section of the intranet and shared documents

o Carry out regular walkabouts, including at retail stores, keeping in touch with staff on their safety arrangements and ensuring control measures are in place and effective

o Provide health and safety training and coaching on topics such as, but not limited to, general health & safety (induction and refresher training), fire safety, COSHH, risk assessing and manual handling

o Develop and refresh internal online training to support staff learning experiences

o Carry out general risk assessment, as required, with particular emphasis on retail, regulatory requirements, outings and the clinical environment.

o Update fire risk assessments for low to medium-risk buildings, tracking completion of actions and updating compliance software

o Manage COSHH risk assessments and the COSHH risk register, checking on suitable PPE and storage

o Manage compliance with workstation assessments, including homeworking, using the external management system

o Support teams, enabling them to carry out their risk assessments, including manual handling assessments for inanimate activities

o Develop and keep up to date Safe Operating Procedures for health and safety.

o To undertake other or additional duties that are within your skills and abilities, as the organisation may reasonably require from time to time.

o Organise external training courses, such as fire extinguisher training and emergency first aid, liaising with the Training team

o Manage the external training provision for display screen equipment and workstation assessment.

o Carry out fire drills in accordance with the fire drill schedule, identifying learning outcomes and working with teams to ensure they can safely evacuate

o Assist with accident / incident investigations under RIDDOR, as directed

o Project work, as agreed with the Head of Health & Safety.

o Support all teams, including the retail teams in achieving excellent health and safety standards
