Main duties of the job

The Role:

This new commissioned service will undertake initial period of collection of statistical data for service impact evaluation. Following this, to provide a high-quality service that includes the identification, assessment, support, guidance and liaison with the men in prison and those on probation in an approved premise with a history and sequelae of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). All work will be conducted under the guidance and supervision of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist with Line Management by the Project Manager. This post will involve working independently according to an established service delivery model in South Wales with the aim to reduce rates of re-offending and harm to self and others within the recognised population. Undertaking the necessary training and regular supervision are core requirements of this post. The post holder will also be expected to engage in clinically related administration and liaise with staff and partnership organisations both within and outside the identified prison and probation services.

Main Responsibilities

To work remotely under the supervision and guidance of a remote Consultant Clinical Psychologist, and a project manager.

To support and manage a complex and varied caseload of men that screen positive for a brain injury and/or have history and sequalae of an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI),under clinical supervision

To administer the Brain Injury Screening Index (BISI) to identify individuals that screen positive for an ABI and complete an assessment of needs to develop an Individual Support Plan (ISP) and planned release (or resettlement plan) for each service user.

To ensure each Individual Support Plan is appropriately designed to complement existing Healthcare and Resettlement Team goals

To implement and review Individual Support Plans with the service user and under supervision ensuring individual needs and preferences are placed at the centre of the process

To access information from the Welsh Clinical Portal to enhance end of service reports and confirm whether an individual had been diagnosed with a brain injury or if they had experienced head injury incidents.

When agreed and directed under supervision; to undertake assessments including psychometric test and neuropsychological assessments if needed, develop formulations and provide any interventions as agreed within supervision.

To develop and deliver Psychosocial interventions on a 1:1 basis, focusing on the sequalae of brain injury.

When agreed, to work with existing services such as the Prison Service, Probation, Courts, Community Services, Social and Healthcare Services and Charities to develop effective diversion and liaison for service users.

When necessary and appropriate under guidance and remote clinical supervision, to provide advocacy for service users which may include the preparation of reports for criminal justice professionals and agencies.

To provide accurate information about ABI and raise awareness amongst service users, prison and community-based professionals.

To provide under guidance information about substances, raise awareness about substance [including alcohol] misuse and its effects in relation to ABI; and provide support to enable service users to access services that focus on the reduction or cessation of substance misuse.

To maintain accurate detailed service user case notes, assessments, and Individual Support Plan for audit

Attend bi-weekly content meetings with DT communication officers when possible.

To follow the agreed service delivery plan, to undertake data collection against identified outcome measures, analysis and the production of reports and summaries.

To maintain a database to allow accurate service evaluation, auditing and research opportunities.

To encourage and enable the involvement and inclusion of the service users in their Individual Support Plan and gather any useful information and feedback from service users to enhance and develop service planning, design and delivery

To engage in monthly project planning meetings and ensure the implementation of any identified actions according to agreed timescales.

To attend challenge, support and intervention plan (CSIP) meetings with the safer custody department within the prisons when requested.

To attend medical handover meeting within the prisons healthcare department when requested.

To comply with the security procedures and other policy requirements of working unsupervised within the prison establishment or Approved Premise

To comply with information sharing protocols of the Prison and Probation Service

To write case studies outlining assessment, interventions and outcomes for communications staff and/or commissioners for content updates and/or reports.

To update and adhere to KPIs that have been set by the Ministry of Justice

Attending probation department units once a month to provide probation staff an opportunity for a consultation for working with people that have been diagnosed, or screen positive, for a brain injury.

To comply with Public Health Wales/NHS Governance guidelines and information management in line with the health boards guidance and the Data Protection Act.

Linkworkers to provide brain injury awareness training to external staff withing the Criminal Justice Service

To complete staff training, as required, including any mandatory staff training within the recipient organisation.

To design and provide training to professionals who work in either the prison and/or probation, with the aim of improving the professionals understanding of brain injury and how it can affect someone in the criminal justice system.

To ensure awareness and compliance with relevant administrative operations, policies and procedures of The Trust and the Prison and Probation Service

To travel as and when required to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, share best practice and liaise with colleagues. This may require overnights stays.

To undertake, any reasonable travelling requirements, in order to fulfil the tasks and responsibilities of the role.
