Job summary

We're looking for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly service at Kerwin Court. We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals who will strive to deliver the best possible service for our service users.

The clinical team is led by a Consultant Neuropsychologist and comprises of clinical neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, nurses, and vocational assistants. The clinical work in supported by specialist rehabilitation support workers and management team.

Main duties of the job

The service provides specialist rehabilitation based upon a psychology model for people to gain their independence. The service users have a range of cognitive, physical and/or emotional symptoms following a severe brain injury.As a BIRT speech and language therapist, you will be part of an exciting and pioneering team with fantastic opportunities. You will:

Work as autonomous speech and language therapist within your multidisciplinary team

Assess how a persons communication impacts on their day to day life and provide intervention as appropriate.

Work with the person and their social network to problem solve and overcome barriers.

Assess communication and provide a management plan and rehabilitation (as appropriate) seeking specialist assessments as required

Provide training to staff and our service users social network

Be integral to service and organisational development.

Job responsibilities

To work within a specialist clinical area as an autonomous professional with support and supervision (which may be remote) from a more senior SaLT for more complex cases. To accept professional accountability and responsibility.

To apply the neurobehavioural approach to brain injury, demonstrating knowledge of current research findings, and best practice in the field.

With supervision as required, to manage a caseload of service users with complex mental/physical health needs and/or challenging behaviour.

To use evidence-based practice, service user centred principles and clinical reasoning to assess, plan, implement and evaluate intervention.

With supervision as required, undertake comprehensive assessments, considering environment, context and future plans, of service users in order to formulate appropriate o rehabilitation goals

Essential

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registered with the HCPC.
  • Dysphagia competencies.

Desirable

  • Membership of RCSLT.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working individually and as part of a multi / interdisciplinary team.
  • Minimum of 2 years post registration experience including inpatient or community rehabilitation or 4+ years post registration experience in an alternative clinical setting.
  • Experience of supervising others (e.g. therapy assistant).
  • Experience of providing rehabilitation services individually as well as in groups.
  • Experience of delivering training.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a neurological setting or ABI service 2 years.
  • Experience of working within an in-patient / residential setting 2 years.
  • Experience of working with people with challenging behaviours 2 years.
  • Experience of being sole clinician in a service.
  • Experience of supporting other team members, e.g. conflict resolution.
  • Experience in developing a Service.
  • Experience of cognitive rehabilitation.
  • Experience of managing and leading a small team.
