Male Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA)

Job summary

Safe Link provides an independent victim-focused service. Safe Link offers both emotional and practical support to victims of rape and sexual assault. Our ethos is to support victims to cope and recover which can include reporting to the police if they wish. We work closely with the Bridge (SARC), Safeguarding partners and the Criminal Justice System (including Crown Court).

Main duties of the job

The ISVA will work closely with the police, Lighthouse and the SARC and will cover the whole of the Avon and Somerset force area. He will have a good understanding of the traumatic impact of sexual assault and rape. He will need to have some knowledge around the criminal justice process and will have a commitment to providing a high quality, victim-focussed and inclusive service.

Second Step is working in partnership with SafeLink. We are looking for a male ISVA to be seconded to work within the SafeLink Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVA) team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Promote the service through building positive relationships with current, potential referrers and service users to ensure a steady flow of appropriate referrals. Provide support as part of an integrated approach by working in partnership with other voluntary and statutory agencies (e.g. the police, local authority, social services, housing, youth service, education/ training/ employment agencies, primary health services, mental health, counselling and substance misuse services) to ensure efficient mechanisms for referrals and to advocate for service users to ensure their needs are met. Provide emotional and practical support by building rapport and trust with service users through regular support sessions, which can be a combination of face to face appointments, telephone, email, text, and skype/facetime. Advocate on behalf of service users in a professional and respectful manner, encouraging and enabling service users to have their own voice and develop self resilience Actively participate in regular one-to-one supervision, reflective practice groups, and annual appraisals. Attend and make a positive contribution to staff / team meetings and to participate in organisational training and development events as required

  • Proven experience of providing advocacy, emotional and practical support and information to men and male victims including legal options, housing, health and finance.
  • An understanding of the Criminal Justice System and processes
  • Experience of a risk assessment processes, safety planning and risk management for male victims sexual violence.
  • Experience of co-producing support and risk management plans that are strengths based and recovery focussed
  • Experience of working in partnership with a wide range of statutory and voluntary agencies, to achieve positive outcomes for male service users
  • Demonstrable experience of being proactive rather than reactive: focuses on preventing problems in the future rather than just resolving immediate issues
  • Experience of lone working in the community
