Job summary

The post holder(s) will provide sessions to schools and parents/carers in supporting, children and young people and their families through advice and consultation sessions to provide guidance, signposting and referral advice based on the local offer of services available. Will also provide workshops and facilitate small groups to provide information on how to maintain emotional wellbeing and positive mental health strategies. The work will mainly be with schools working, with and within education environments supporting and facilitating conversations with staff in education settings to identify and support solutions and effective strategies related to mental health and wellbeing, and to afford better access to health services.

The post-holder(s) will work with young people and families from diverse backgrounds and should be fully committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and ensuring access to services for all. The post holder must be prepared to be flexible in their working arrangements to ensure that all children and young people can access support at a time which suits their needs. The other aspect of this work will be supporting the development of workshops and groups in schools, in the community or online.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the development of early intervention and prevention service in Bromley for Children and Young People. The post holder will provide advice and support to children, young people and their families through workshops and small groups to provide them with information on how to maintain their emotional wellbeing. The work will mainly be with schools but will also extend to smaller community-based groups to ensure in reach to young people who would not normally access services. This will involve supporting children and young people within these settings who present with more severe problems to rapidly access more specialist service, supporting and facilitating staff in education settings to identify and where appropriate manage issues related to mental health and wellbeing, working with and within education environments to afford better access to health services.

The post-holder will work with young people from diverse backgrounds and should be fully committed to diversity and ensuring access to services for all. Work will be carried out digitally from home as well as working with children and young people at schools and in different community settings. The post holder must be prepared to be flexible in their working arrangements to ensure that all children and young people can access support at a time which suits their needs. The other aspect of this work will be developing workshops and other online resources.

To deliver specialist evidence based therapeutic interventions with a caseload of children and families, to maintain their professional qualification, keeping abreast of current training and practice in area

To provide advice, support and knowledge of appropriate resources for the emotional wellbeing of children and their families.

To plan interventions for children and young peoples emotional and mental health issues with schools through the Support and Advice Meetings.

To support development and delivery of psychoeducational workshops, webinars and groups for young people, parents/carers and school staff.

To carry out joint and/or individual assessments of children and families, if required.

To provide support and guidance to others particularly schools with the aim of improving skills, knowledge and facilitating reflective practice.

Manage own workload through both clinical practice and managerial supervision.

To participate in team and service meetings as required.

To work alongside others to demonstrate knowledge and skills to plan and critically evaluate the implementation of the early intervention role to meet the mental health needs of children and young people.

To contribute to the evaluation of all areas of service delivery, client and professional satisfaction and the impact of interventions.

PRACTICE RESPONSIBILITIES

Accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service and develop programmes of interventions in educational settings for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

Undertake assessments with young people and parents which identify areas where the young person/ parent wishes to see change and/or recovery.

To identify, monitor and manage risk to self or others in every contact with a service user.

Deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions in educational and other settings for children and young people experiencing emotional wellbeing or mental health difficulties.

Complete all data entry as required within the service in a timely manner.

Keep coherent, up to date and accurate records of all activity in line with service protocols.

Assess, and where appropriate, refer on for specialist mental health support.

Engage in managerial and clinical supervision, identifying the scope of practice of the individual postholder, and working safely within that scope.

Contribute to the development of individual or group materials or training materials.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

To ensure knowledge and skills are continuously developed and maintained at a high level of competence.

To identify training needs through supervision and personal development plans.

To design and deliver training services/workshops and to take part in their evaluation.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Experience of working with children and families, including work with children and young people with emotional and mental health needs and delivering evidence-based interventions.

Qualifications

  • PgDip/Cert in Counselling Children & Adolescents, Creative Arts Therapies, Education Mental Health Practice, Childrens Psychological Wellbeing Practice or equivalent IAPT qualification.

Desirable

  • Undergraduate degree in psychology or related subject.

Knowledge and skills

  • Ability to listen empathetically to children and young people and their families in order to work effectively in partnership. Qualities essential to practice, including, respect, genuineness, empathy, personal integrity and communication skills, to enable the therapeutic relationship and process. Ability to work in partnership with children and families.
