Job summary

The Engagement Officer for Bexley will deliver three high profile strands of work over the course of the contract delivering key objectives for the Veterans Project, Wellbeing Ambassador Project (which includes the Bexley Barbershop Project) and Physical Health Checks initiative. To assist in the engagement side of this work the postholder will deliver talks to relevant professional groups about the projects, be comfortable speaking to video camera and assist in creating social media posts.

The postholder will work closely with the marketing and communications team to deliver this work. The element of the role linked to veterans uses the job title of Armed Forces Connector.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities;You will be required to plan, execute, monitor and control multiple projects at the same time with specific focus on the Veterans Project, Wellbeing Ambassador Project (which includes the Bexley Barbershop Project) and Physical Health Checks initiative.

You will be required to ensure the projects are delivered to a high standard, within budget and set timeframes. Facilitate co-design of leaflets, digital messaging and targeted social media profiles to improve awareness and take up for each project and to develop a toolkit to provide tailored support.

For each project you will be responsible for identifying risks and uncertainties whilst ensuring each project aligns with the vision and strategy of the organisation. Working in collaboration with the Development and Fundraising Lead to improve the impact of the projects to reach successful outcomes.

General responsibilities

Maintain clear, accurate and up-to-date database records listing key contacts within the London borough of Bexley local authority area.

To support the creation of materials required to make the role a success.

Deliver exceptional client care through building relationships with key contacts. Seek to understand their motivations and assist them on their recovery journey.

Confidently present the key messages and organisational values of the charity.

Contribute content for the charity regular e-newsletters.

Project requirements; Physical Health Checks (including, but not limited to):

To improve the take-up of physical health checks for residents with severe mental illness in Bexley by promoting the range of services available to support such patients to health professionals. To advise professionals how best to deliver targeted and culturally appropriate messages for varying client groups.

Work in partnership with Oxleas PHC lead, Bexley LCNS (Clocktower, Frognal, North), individual Bexley CCPL Leads and Mental Health Practitioners across the PCNs and residents with lived experience to co-design a short professional video in order to raise awareness, improve knowledge of challenges faced by residents with serious mental illness in Bexley with an overall aim of improving take up.

Work with colleagues from the Bexley BAME forum based at Mind to ensure culturally appropriateness.

Explore non clinical settings to target individuals and hold open information days and Health Check events. Build on partnerships already in place including Crook Log Leisure Centre, Welling Football Club and Erith Football Club.

Develop a goal orientated peer mentioning programme whereby peer mentors with lived experience support residents on the SMI register in order to improve motivation to take up and assist with participating fully in all 6 health checks.

Wellbeing Ambassador Project (including, but not limited to):

Building on the success of the Bexley Barbershop Project, the postholder will recruit and support barbers, hair stylists, tattooists and nail bar technicians as Mind in Bexley Ambassadors who will be trained to spot signs of anxiety and depression in their customers and to signpost them to appropriate support.

Stage monthly evening peer to peer support session for ambassadors to talk through their experiences delivering the wellbeing project and provide additional training as required.

Armed Forces Connector responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Facilitate a weekly peer to peer support session for ex-military, reservists and their adult family members to improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation as a first step to addressing alcohol reliance and mental health needs.
  • Invite members of the ex-military community for a 1-2-1 meeting to discuss their needs, referring and signposting as appropriate. Equal emphasis on ensuring each individual makes social connections to combat loneliness and isolation and build a network of peer support, as well as address physical health, emotional and mental health needs through professional support.
  • Using Mailchimp the Armed Forces Connector will create a hyper-local service leaver e-bulletin that can provide local communication and details on both social networking opportunities and local services available.
  • Armed Forces Connector to encourage clients to attend Mind in Bexley wellbeing activities such as walking, art and gardening groups and to introduce new clients to sessions to ease integration.
  • To create a programme of bi-monthly social events. These high-profile events will help attract service leavers to the project, facilitate development of friendship groups amongst the members, and provide an informal opportunity for service leavers to talk to Mind staff and other professionals about any support they need.

  • Facilitate a monthly Saturday morning breakfast club meeting and invite service leavers to reduce isolation and provide peer support. Armed Forces Connector to facilitate and support such groups as needed, allow members to direct content.
