Consultant - Palliative Medicine, St Wilfrid's Hospice, Bosham, Chichester (6 - 10 PA's negotiable).

Main duties of the job
We are at the forefront of palliative care, and our new Consultant will have the opportunity to provide clinical leadership and participate in research, education and service development.
Clinical care will be delivered on the inpatient unit and in the community, including outpatients.
There are also close working relationships with the local hospital teams and there is flexibility to evolve the job plan to suit the successful applicant.
About us
St Wilfrid's is an established and well
supported hospice with 14 in-patient beds, a community service and Living Well
Centre, education and bereavement services. We have a beautiful new
purpose-built facility in Bosham on the rural fringe of Chichester.
Applicants are required to be on the GMC's
Specialist Register with a licence to practice, or within six months of their
expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. We would also be
keen to hear from specialists in areas such as elderly medicine or respiratory
medicine who might be interested in working in a hospice setting.

JOB PURPOSE
- To work as part of the Hospice consultant medical team to assist in the provision of a palliative medicine service at St Wilfrids Hospice, ensuring that all aspects of the clinical service are covered at all times including the inpatient unit and community.
- To supervise and teach medical and other staff and students.
- To contribute to clinical governance processes and take a lead role on specific areas of service provision and development.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
- Promotes the St Wilfrids culture of excellence in patient and people care
- Works as part of the Hospice consultant medical team to assist in the provision of a palliative medicine service
- Provides high quality clinical care for patients and carers in the inpatient unit and community
- Maintains the standards defined by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice
- Takes part in the consultant on-call rota including covering duties of colleagues on leave
- Works as a member of the Hospices multidisciplinary team, attending team meetings and supporting learning and development of the clinical team
- Supports the junior medical team in clinical care, learning and development
- Leads on specific areas of clinical service provision as agreed within the team
- Maintains knowledge and awareness of developments in palliative care such as guidelines and standards from NICE and the Department of Health
Training, education and research
- Engages with continuing professional development for self and others including mandatory updates
- Takes part in clinical and other activities working towards medical revalidation
- Supports assessment and supervision of GP trainees
- Engages in medical student education and other internal and external training opportunities
- Recognises the importance of research and supports engagement
Governance, audit
- Contributes to the Hospices clinical governance processes
- Takes part in annual appraisal and performance review
- Works within agreed Hospice policies, procedures and guidelines
- Challenges the medical team and hospice service to make continuous improvement
- Contributes towards ensuring that the Hospices exposure to risk is minimised through safe practice and awareness of health and safety and infection control
- Contributes to reporting of progress towards meeting relevant strategic and operational goals
People and leadership
- Leads on specific areas of service development, education etc as agreed within the medical team
- Contributes to implementation of national guidelines and to service developments
- Communicates clearly and regularly with line manager and colleagues
- Motivates and directs both staff and volunteers to ensure high standards of performance and delivery
- Treats volunteers with respect and values their contribution
