Role Summary:
The Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Fellow will be expected to:
Assess and manage emergency patients presenting with decompression illness and arterial gas embolism under the supervision and guidance of a senior diving doctor.
Triage emergency telephone calls on a nationwide basis via the emergency diving advice line in conjunction with divers / emergency departments / ambulance service and coastguard
Perform recreational diving medicals under the supervision and guidance of a senior diving doctor.
Perform weekly telephone fitness to dive telephone consultation clinics
Manage elective hyperbaric patients being treated for a number of indications (such as osteoradionecrosis and complex wounds) in conjunction with multidisciplinary team
Teach on a variety of courses (such as Diver Medic Technician, HSE Offshore, Expedition Dive Medicine, etc.)
Engage with clinical governance/quality improvement projects
Develop own interests and projects according to individual career ambitions, supported by DDRC.
The successful candidates will be encouraged and funded to undertake: Online Diving Medicine Module, DMAC 1 Medical Assessment of Divers, DMAC 2.
About us
DDRC Healthcare is a charity and leading hyperbaric centre,
commissioned by the NHS. We use our chamber to treat divers with decompression
illness but also to treat a range of other diseases such as wounds and problems
following radiotherapy. We currently treat 3-4 patients a day and have an
extraordinarily high staff to patient ratio, allowing unrushed, excellent care and the
opportunity to get to know our patients well.
The whole organisation employs approximately 60 staff as regular employees and contracted bank staff. Our turnover is in the region of £2 million per year.
We are situated on the Plymouth Science Park, next to University Hospitals Plymouth (Derriford Hospital) and close to the Peninsula Medical School. Within our fantastic facility you will find the Brain Research and Imaging Centre (BRIC), with whom we work closely.

Hours of Work:
At DDRC: Average of 3 days per week at DDRC (with the
potential to increase this up to 5 days per week by mutual agreement). Standard
hours 08:30 17:00. No mandatory on-call requirement but the applicant would
be encouraged to join the emergency on-call rota for which they would be
remunerated separately.
Outside DDRC: The applicant would be encouraged to
undertake clinical work suiting their individual requirements alongside their
work at DDRC. Availability of external work cannot be guaranteed, however,
support will be given to join Derriford hospital bank if required.
